School the newb on how to make 400hp

Going to be purchasing a new car soon and its gonna be a pig nose. (will be my second) I am starting my research on the sr20 and what it takes to make it to the 400horse range. So Im gonna be like a sponge. Tell me everything I need to know to make it to that range. Thanks

lt1?

or not but maybe you should specify just about how much money you are willing to spend and if you will be doing the work yourself. because what it boils down to is money, lots and lots of money.

Money is not going to be an issue. This is a build for me. I will be doing most of the work myself. Of course tuning will be done by someone else. I am very mechanically inclined.

Heres my parts list I have been working on tonite. Still have alot to find

Eagle Connecting Rods 349.99
HKS 264/272 Cams 231.99
ATI Fluid Damper 439.99
CP Pistons 499.99
ARP Headstuds 149.99
Exhaust Manifold Studs 49.99
Garrett GT3071 R turbo 1249.99 Supportable of up to 475whp
• COMPRESSOR SPECS:
• .50 A/R
• 4" Inlet
• 71mm 56 Trim Wheel
• Flow: 46 lb/min
• TURBINE SPECS:
• T2 Flanged
• .86 A/R
• 57mm 90 Trim Wheel
• Internal Wastegate (Actuator not included)

Spec FLywheel 299.99

AEM EMS 1999.99 With wideband UEGO
HKS Fuels rail 389.99
Walbro Fuel Pump 99.99 255 ltr/hr
Aeromotive Fuel Pressure regulator 259.99
Cometic Head Gasket 129.99
Greddy Intake Manifold 674.99
Tomei Big Bore TB 345.00 70 mm
Greddy LS Spec IC 489.99
Motor 2750.00
MR Aluminum Pulleys 99.99
COMP Cams Valve Springs 179.99
HKS Rocker Arm stoppers 109.99

Still need to find an exhaust manifold with a T2 flange and a dual fuel pump setup to support the HP levels. Also does anyone have some recommendations on injectors?

if 400hp is your goal why do you need a gt3071r?

people are making 400whp with a gt2871r .64, cams, 300zx mafs, injectors, and a tune.

If you want to make 400hp reliably and daily you need something more than 4cyl. why are you opposed to v8? vh45 and 1uzfe are options as well

**** vh45's if you want a v8 go with an ls1 or ls2. pushrod ftw. but you can make a reliable 400whp. all depends on the build and tune

Btw, it's going to be a waste of money to buy a good motor (I noticed you priced one at 2700)... get a motor with blown ringlands for $500 instead. Also, if you are so mechanically inclined, why do you say "school the noob..." It seems like you came up with a pretty good list of parts yourself without our help. Bearings might not be a bad idea (unless you just left that out because it's so obvious). You probably want some head work done to make that goal more efficiently too.

some of the stuff he has listed is a little overkill. i would just do cp pistons, minor headwork, cams, greddy IM. gt2871r with .64 mafs injectors and tune the crap out of it. you don't need full standalone. waste of money unless you're an uber serious tuner aiming for crazy numbers. just do a daughterboard setup. 2000 dollars on an ems when your power goal is only 400whp is kind of a waste. he'll have a responsive 400whp. i'm not a fan of getting any turbos bigger than that and keeping a t2 flange. it's pointless. you'll get a more expnsive turbo to spool like a 600 dollar t3/t4 and make the same power as the t3/t4. go top mount with a t3 flange if you're gonna get a really nice flowing big turbo.

You're way overkill buddy, and to jump out and build a good motor like that doesn't make sense, like another guy said, buy a blown engine if you're stuck on building it.

As far as parts go.
Tomei 260 Cams or JWT/BC/HKS
Metal HG
CP Pistons
Stock Rods
ARP Hardware
Bearings etc.
Walbro Pump
740cc Inj.
Enthalpy or JWT Rom tune.
Garrett 2871R 56T
Z32 MAF
Ex Honed Stock or Tomei Expreme Manifold
FPR
RAS

Maybe missing a few but that will get you around 400hp

I'm in Nashville, if you need more help.

Theres only like 3 cars which have achieved this(400whp with 2871 .64) with this small of a turbo. You want a turbo which is has the ability to support your goals with ease. You dont want to be pushing the turbo to the border line of its efficiency. Heck 400whp with an SR as long as its a healthy one is easy.

Budget Build: ($2700)
Holset HX35 - $300 (spools like a gt30r with the power of a gt35r)
Ebay Top Mount Mani - $200
Oil Lines - $160
Fuel Injectors (740cc) - $370 (DW's)
Rom tune - $350 (EFI specialists)
Z32 Maf - $80
Custom DP and Cold pipe - $300
FMIC kit - $200 (Ebay)
BC 264's - $400
Valve Springs/Retainers - $300
Boost Controller - $200 (used)

Premium Build: ($3000 - $XXXXX)
BW Turbo (bling version of holset and much better than garrett) - $1200+
Full Race mani or other - $800 - $1500
Lines - $160
AEM, Apexi PFC, Nistune - $700 - $2000
Greddy Intake Mani - $700
Top Feed Rail and Injectors - $ 700
FMIC - $700
Tomei Cams - $600
ect..ect..ect...

Just do some real research and do a whole lot of shopping around. And dont be afraid to ask for discounts or price matching. As crappy as the economy is right now it sure is good for people who saved their eggs and have money to burn right now. People really are willing to move on prices on everything right now.
