Remove Retaining Nut From Strut

Remove Retaining Nut From Strut
I'm rebuilding my front suspension on my 90. The strut mount broke off the strut and I need to replace the mount. I've got the strut off.
I've searched different forums and most say to compress the spring and take a vise to the rod while turning the retaining nut. But I can't get the vise to hold and of course the rod just spins.
The FSM says to first loosen the retaining nut, then compress, once compressed fully release the retaining nut. Without a table vise, I can't get a good hold of the strut to break the nut.
Is there a good way to do this. I don't have an air impact wrench. Should I install the strut back on the spindle and try to loosen the nut that way.
