10" subs in the rear door (if it had a rear door)

just wanted to share a pic of my custom sub install... I got the idea from an article I saw where some other guy put 10's in the space next to the rear seat (behind the side panel)
I plan on writing a more detailed how-to on it - when I finish I'll post it here and on my cardomain page :) |

8"s should be easy - the 10" was a little hard positioning it in a spot that was high enough to get through the grille, without being too high to clear the window frame :thumb:

The people that have done the 8" say its great...but 10" is a bit of a overkill and harder to fit.

Yeah, 10's are definitely overkill - I had to use like 4 bags of acoustifill on each side to compensate... the JL subs were from my old car though, so I had no choice other than to sell them and buy 8"s.
Thing is, I'm not "Mr. public radio" blasting my stereo so everyone in the next city can hear. Weird thing is, with this mounting spot when you turn up the bass, it's mostly on the inside - inside it seems like you're shaking your neighbors (especially with 10's) but step outside the car, close the door, and all you hear is a very very faint "thumping" noise. That part made me happy because I can turn it up if I actually feel like it, but I don't have to worry about cops or the guy in the next car hearing my music. Another byproduct of this install - you will know each and every single little thing vibrating in your interior. Oh yeah! LOL :thumb: |
I dont even have that much a system right now and my passenger side door panel is all ready vibrating pretty loud :(

Brian Buwalda did this (first I think) in his competition 240SX. He found that there is about .7 cu ft of space on each side which is perfect for the small enclosure 10's. He also was able to fit 8" in the doors with only a baffle board and no door panel mods (other than deadening and rattle management ;)). He did 5.25 coaxials with remote tweeters in the kicks eventually cutting out a 7x7" enclosure into the wheel well (he may have used 6.5" coaxials, I don't have time to look it up)....He also found the stock pillar tweeters directly firing at each other provided good imaging.
I plan on doing the same thing but on his advice will go infinite baffle. My only question is how do you get the quarter panel trim to reattach to the side? Å |
there's 2 plastic posts behind the panel that holds pop-rivets (whatever they're called) that attach the panel to the bodywork... I just trimmed them to fit flush against the baffle board (which obviously covered two slots where the posts used to snap in) and put a small piece of Dynamat on them to eliminate any rattle. This is also the reason why the relays are screwed to the baffle board in the picture - the board the way I made it covers the original stock mounting position for the relays.
My main intention wasn't to go for full competitionn sound system at all, but.... to get my trunk space back! I find it way too far a task for me if I were to create an enclosure in the footwells to mount a set of components... for daily driving and the commute, the stock 6.5"ers in the doors and the A-pillar tweeters more than serve their purpose :thumb: |
the metal clip in the front of the panel works? My passenger side 1/4 clips are both broken and it's pretty loose. I haven't played with it much though. I am debating the 8" or 10" route and then infinite baffle or sealed .7" enclosures.

Ahh I didn't know there were three metal clips, I only saw one, but I didn't look hard as the two plastic clips were broken so I had to replace them before I snapped it back down.

Would you be able to do the same for an fastback S13 cause that looks pretty sweet. It's stealthy and everything, plus space saving. Me like. That's slick man.

thats awesome. can you post a link to where you got the idea from? i got 2 8" speakers lying around so i might as well put them to use. heh
