I didn't mean to flame anyones taste in Alpine--but I just wanted the original poster to know that Alpine isn't the end-all for amps out there. Actually, yeah Eclipse is supposed to be really good. I didn't hear about them until recently...I'm an installer at Circuit City, and we're supposed to be getting them as one of our product lines.
Alpine headunits are great though...they are probably some of the best out there as far as functionality and design. Their subs are pretty top notch too. I'm just not a big fan of their amps.

really? ive never had any problems with them. ive had 2, and have been in the audio scene for nearly 3 years, and my amps have never shut down on me. I had an old bazooka amp, a newer rockford (they are garbage) and some off brand amp, and all of them shut down on me after about an hour of good play time... Ive driven all the way from where i live to houston texas (about 7 hours of a drive, in good traffic) with the music pumpin pretty good and the amp didnt shut down on me... it burned my hand when i touched it, but theyre pretty solid amps. They do have some quirks though ill admit... like how they arent 2 ohm or 1 ohm stable in bridged mode (their 2 channel amps that is), how they are pretty massive in size, they can be a pain in the *** once you start fiddling with the parametric equalizer on their old bass series amps (like i have). Its a wonderful feature, but it takes a while to tune it jst right. Also, the power light blinks, which tells me i have a bad battery connection or low voltage, but i was getting 13.8 in the trunk, and both of my alpines did that... they were loud and clear though, so i just ignored the light.
The reason i defend alpine's amps so much is that ive had a hard time finding a more reliable amp for the price. That and the sound is crystal clear... granted its not the LOUDEST, but alpine isnt into the SPL business as much as they are into SQ

Oh, I agree, they are good amps; my only main point was that there are a lot of comparable amps out there as well. I definitely prefer them over an Alpine amp, but I'm in no way saying that they are bad amps. It's just personal preference based on what I like personally. For what it's worth they get the job done, definitely. There are a few other options as well though, just depends on what you're looking for.
If you want something to crush those Type-R's, higher end Alpine amps can be expensive; hell--any higher end amp is expensive. In the end I guess the saying is still true: You get what you pay for.
