I would come to think that it would be harder to go drifting if you didn't have power steering. It would seem like it would be harder to control and counter steer.

tegg_gsr 01-05-2004 11:30 AM

thats what i thought but ive driven cars w/o power steering and as long as the car is rolling its not much different.

Drifting is better without powersteering. With powersteering, it's... "virtual." It uses a motor (I think?) to make steering easier, but that means that you wouldn't be getting the real feedback from the front tires.

No powersteering "tells you what the car is feeling and telling you." I don't know, I heard someone say that before, it was kinda funny. Hahaha.

good question...I dont really know. I would think that it is harder, but ive never had first hand experience with it.

Alright, this is how power steering works:

There's a pump with a belt and a pulley. When the engine is running, it turns the pulley. When the pulley turns, it pumps hydraulic fluid into the steering rack which you turn.

If you have an MR2:
A motor drives the pump.

If you have an S2000:
An electric motor turns the rack.

For the most part, removing PS will give you better feedback.
Just remember when you drain the PS fluid, move the steering wheel lock to lock to get everything out. You have one less belt, and one less part to worry about breaking. The front of the S13 is fairly light so I don't think you have much to worry about unless your arms are pencil thin. Mine are, and I don't have much of a problem turning the steering wheel of a G35 when it's off.
