Setting up for drifting
 

:wave: I have been doing a little research on "setting up" a 240 for drifting. While I was in the autoparts store today, I picked up a copy of this months Import Tuner(September Issue). Starting on page 160 they have a fabulous article on building a s14 turbocharged drift car. This is part two of a three part article, (to keep us buying the rag/mag), and I have not found the first part yet, but I am looking. If you are a novice or pro, this sounds pretty interesting. Well I can only speak for the novice, so if any pro's read the article you can tell us what you think. I am going to the library tomorrow to find part 1. It was helpful to me because I am beginning from scratch on building a drift car. I have had some good imput from members of this forum and am appreciative. Hope this helps someone else. Where are you from?

You do not need turbo to drift.

You do not need LSD to drift. Granted it will help and the drifts will be more precise, don't let anyone talk you out of trying because you don't have one. We all have to start somewhere.

I have been drifting for 6 months now and it is fun. Half of the fun is the people and family involved with it.

I would watch what magazines tell you to purchase. They might be too much for you right now and will hurt your progress rather than help it.

You do not need a turbo to drift.

Did I mention that you don't need a SR to drift.

Nor a RB.

That KA-T don't need to be slapped on there.

The CA18det is also cool but you don't need that either.

You need seat time right now.

is it hard to drift? im about to be 16 and i was just wondering.

You just need practice.

We have guys that are 17 and they are learning quickly.

suspension is 10X more important than slapping that sr20 in there, but nobody understands that, lol. Turbo doesn't help you when you're drifting sideways, those upgraded sway & strut bars and bushings and shocks will

Thanks to all that have participated in this thread. I can certainly use the information and look forward to building my car and getting on the track, not necessarily in that order. I am going to start with some coilovers and perhaps some beefed up sway bars. I am also going to buy some steel (cheap ass) wheels and a few tires. Then I am going to find someplace that will help me figure out how to drift.

I also have to swap out my tranny, it is an automatic (damn) and that will only take one weekend (Hopefully).

I have read about several events in the New York area and will try to make one of them.

I live in Columbus Ohio and it is not too far for a good time on the track.

I will probably see some of you there.

Actually yes it does. Boost spike can be used to create wheelspin while the car is already in mid slide. Making the car stay sideways without using the e-brake it is called power over.

I tend to want to power over seeing that I do not have an e-brake but my ka is only knows power under.

They are happening in NJ so you are even closer.

Stan Bo's right. Nothing will help you more than practice and experience.

But the first mods I would suggest would be springs/dampers and a LSD. They both provide more consistency for drifting.

You are also dealing with vehicles that are 10 years old. Slapping on new stronger parts will have the car react in funky ways. Trust me on that one. Personal experience.

Rear ends that feel fishy. It is crazy.

Right now my chassis has close to 50% new arms and bushings as well as new braces. They will all be new very soon.

what spring rate r u guys using?

A good streetable performance rate would be 8kg front, 6kg rear. Just make sure it's dampened properly or you'll be bouncin all over the place :thumb:

6k front and 5k rear.

Also watch your ride height dependant on what coilovers you get. Some don't like to be slammed to the ground.

hey stanbo i really like the info you post....you are really informative.....i am a beginner also to drifting...havent gone on the course yet because been busy with school and work....my friend owns a hachi and been buggin me to go to irwindale with him...hopefully i can go soon to start practicing....as for mods go...im looking around but havent made a perminant wish list yet....all i've gotten for the 240 is a broadway mirror...hopefully that will be good enough mod to tear it up on the course...heheheh:D

Broadways rock but you are gonna want to take it off. Stuff flies around in the car when you are rocking out.
