How to stop flywheel from turning?
 

When I was taking off the clutch, I jammed a big ass screwdriver between the clutch and the ground to stop it from turning so I could take off the bolts.

I tried the same technique with the flywheel by putting a flathead into the teeth of the flywheel, but its being stubborn.

I know a bunch of the pulleys and stuff turn on the other side of my sr20det when the clutch turns.

I tried searching but couldn't find an answer to this. Whats the easiest way to stop the flywheel from turning so I can take it off?

PS: My engines just sitting on a pallet (if that means anything)

from what i have heard you need a flywheel puller. you could find it at your local autoparts store.

does the flywheel puller just help get it off or does it actually stop it from turning?

I got this little plasitc aligment tool with my act clutch kit so I'll see what that does tomorrow by sticking it in the middle of the flywheel.

Heat up your flywheel bolts with a torch, then try your screwdriver thing again. I read somewhere thats the best way to loosen up flywheel bolts.

i just bought an Impact gun for 120 dollars at lowes.( Kobalt ) is the brand and it has a ton oF TQ. also i work in shops back home and have access to air.

with the pressure plate u can just use and 12mm and and hammer to impact it.

you dont wanna damage you teeth on you flywheel becuase you will have to bust out the dremal and fix em.

i wouldnt impact them(but if u do so heat them up and do it lightly, you dont wana strip em), just get a breaker bar (or pipe) and big screwdrivers or equivalent (try to have 2 people holding it...

Im not having a problem with that part yet. I just want the flywheel to stop moving so I can use my ratchet.

Im assuming the only way is to get a huge socket and put another ratchet on the crank to hold it.

Okay, then get a pulley chain and use it to stop the pulley from spinning. Okay I just came across this from ebay, dont see how it works but its for the job.

just get a chain from home depot, put one link into a bellhousing bolt and another link into one of the bolts where the pressure plate bolted up. NOW, when u turn the flywheel it will turn only until the chain stops it, and BOOM u break the bolts loose.

edit: it doesnt have to be a long piece of chain...maybe like a foot or so.

I added this as a supplement to my 5 speed conversion, but figured a few more people would find it handy...

There are a few ways to get an automatic or manual flywheel on or off.

The easiest by far is to have an impact gun. A quick ziiiip and the flywheel is on the ground. If you don't have an impact gun the flywheel will spin as you try to take it off, you can attempt to brace the flywheel using screwdrivers and such, while holding the crank pulley with a 27mm socket.... or you can use this secret:


EASY WAY TO GET ON AND OFF A FLYWHEEL: upon doing a clutch swap a year or so after my 5 speed conversion, I ran into a really easy way to change the flywheel. Basically you get a new bolt (and possibly a nut) that will fit into a hole on the flywheel (the hole not used to bolt to the crankshaft) and use a bellhousing bolt. Run a chain between the two bolts as shown in the diagram below. it doesn't matter if the chain is too long, the excess can just dangle. Put the chain on and then turn the flywheel to add tension to the chain. The chain will now keep the flywheel from spinning. This works great to hold the flywheel if you don't have an impact gun. Wrench away.
