MT question

hey this is my first stick car and i had a question about the trans. when the clutch is in i thought nothing was engaged, therefore u wouldnt grind on anything etc. ive noticed that if when im approaching a stop, if i go through the gears with the clutch all the way in, i have no problems, until i get to first, it wont let me put it in until the car slows to about 20 mph, then it slides in. what is the reason for this? initially i thought my trans was messed so i tried to move it around and force it in, but it just grinded, same with reverse, sometimes ill get grinds with the clutch all the way down. does anyone else have that problem?

Why are you trying to go into first gear at 20mph?????????

Rouge S13 05-02-2004 04:06 PM

its just a saftey thing.

JeromeS13 05-02-2004 04:08 PM

A safety thing? I'm assuming you're NOT applying the "safety thing" to your transmission. You should NOT try to go into gear down into 1st gear while moving. IF anything, do it under 10mph....

ummm how about jus leave it in neutral and brake?
1st gear locks as a safety thing to make sure u dont accidently downshift from 5th to 1st

i never downshift into first, i was just wondering why it wont let me go into it. for example if i know im coming to a toll, i would put it in first and hold the clutch down while i look for change rolling to a stop. then i can just take off without having to use the stick again. i assumed it was a safety feature but just wanted to check.

sr20det power 05-02-2004 07:13 PM

yea it is a safety feature
most cars after u hit like 10-20mph it will lock it once u shift out of 1st
jus be patient n shift when u need to
its not that big of a deal

haha i know, i was just curious, cuz i had asked other people and they were like ummmm ive never seen that. so i figured id ask the pros
