possibly buying car. tranny problems. plz help

i went to test drive a 1990 black 240 today and the guy said he had the engine in tranny put in from his friends 240 because his friend did the sr swap. the engine has 116k miles on it. however when i went to drive it i had a hard time telling if it was in neutral or first becuase the gears are very close. he tells me theres a short shifter. also when i went to stop and push the clutch in at first i heard like a squeaking noise and when i was just sitting i had the clutch pushed in and the gears were hard to move in between.. this only happened when i was sitting. i didnt have too much trouble shifting while driving. what do you guys think is wrong with it. the rest of teh car is in great shape and the guy wants a grand. if i can get it for 7 or 8 is it worth the trouble i may encounter witht the clutch or tranny.. what do you guys think could be wrong and what should i do

was it hard to get into first, or just hard to tell if you were in or not? if it went into and out of the gears fine, with no noise, or hesitating I would say the tranny has a good amount of life in it and you should go for it. as for it being worth the trouble, that all depends if you want to change your own tranny or not. they arent that hard, but you would want to have someone help you if it was your first time.
so that part is up to you

alright well i would either have my friend help me or take it to a garage, but where is the best place to get a new tranny. and

"was it hard to get into first, or just hard to tell if you were in or not?"
it was just hard to tell if it was in first. because of where the stick sat. and once i started there wasnt too much hesitation. i could always go back and drive it again. just what things should i look for and test out on the clutch and tranny.. thanks guys

you can probably find more than a few in the "For Sale" section, or if you have a local swap shop near you they probably have a few just lying around
