welded diffs

just wondering if welded diffs were bad for the trans and rear axle coz a friend of mines told me it would rip the trans apart and my other friend told me the worst that can happen is wear the tires out faster... idk whose rite so i was wondering if anyone here would know... thanks

your friend must not work on cars alot or own a car with a welded diff. also he seems to read to much...

ill get to the point

1. don't get the diff welded if you are not going to enter drift comps or drift the car weekly

2. tires will wear

3 chirping will happen at low speeds

4. I welded my diff and only failed becuase i used a crappy flux welder. get it mig welded

prodigys14 03-05-2007 11:35 PM

ic thanks but is it safe if it was in a auto trans?

Biggamehit 03-06-2007 03:11 AM

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm now that... i don't know. i cant comment on that. i have not driven an auto 240 before. I know auto trannies are suppose to be even stronger, but bro for fun factors and alot of other reasons such as total control you need to gather about 300 to 400 dollars worth of junkyard parts and convert to manual bro.

Mig weld a diff I would give that a big no. Mig is ok for body panels and your exhaust, I would want something a bit stronger on the drive train.

yeah, i agree. I had mines mig welded a couple of times because its what we use around the shop and it consistantly kept breaking the welds.

Biggamehit 03-20-2007 02:55 PM

brothers. i have buddies who have driven in comps on mig welders.. and have had the diff for over 2 years... you cant just open it up and weld away.

first you must dry the gears ( break cleaner) and grind gears down if you can

second you must heat the gears with torch ( the metal is heat treated and will not bond properly if cold.)

last you must weld at least 8 points ( and weld it to the carrier) to make this diff solid. and then you drift on bro.

Migs are not Flux welders and are strong you need over 220Volts

my man Zenkislider here on the forums has a welded Diff.
he knows the 4-1-1, since its done on his D/D
but yeah it gets the job done.

several of my friends have welded diffs and they run fine at events, comps and daily. im planning on welding both of my diffs (cressida and 240) soon.
