350z and LS1 swaps

Has anyone on this board attempted to put a 350z or LS1 or LT1 motor in a 240sx? I am very interested in doing this conversion and would like to know what it takes and how much of a headache it will be. A link to someones conversion would be fine as well.

Thanks,

Aaron

LS1 and LT1 have both been done

and the VQ swap....yes that has been done as well. as far as the level of headache...depends on your skill

but, i would guess that none are easy....or cheap

Hinson Super Cars has a basic mounting kit for the LSx you could look into.
www.hinsonsupercars.com
But like TypeX said, theres TONS of info out there about this.

I've done the ls1 swap twice and am doing a third swap right now. It is an expensive swap mainly because the motorsets are costly but the results are awesome.

Your looking at 5-6K (4K if you get deals) for a basic swap. For all the parts and that doesnt include labor cost if you pay someone.

If you dont want to pay a butt load for custom work, go to

www.hinsonsupercars.com for a completed LSx swap kit

and for the 350, go to

www.VQSWAP.com

They are the only guys I know of who make a decent priced swap kit for the VQ motors.

VQ35 in a Miata would be interesting... V8 in a Miata is just an explosion waiting to happen... I dont know why, but a clown car plus a torque beast of a small block 8...

what about the performance? this swap sounds kick *** to me... the SR or RB motors would be a big headache for me, no real turbo tuners over here in Germany, but a close friends dad is a die hard chevy man with a 700rwhp 1970 camaro! from what i am seeing, as long as you buy the swap kit, it doesn't seem too too hard. i am only looking for around 300rwhp to start with any how!

how much more does the LS1 weigh than an SR or RB?

thanks,
mike

LS1 long block with all accessories is about 400+ lbs. SR is very light, RB is a good 500+, not sure how much it weights, but iron block aluminum head is pretty heavy.

Its been a while, so Im not sure how much they all weigh.

For those wondering how much an LS1 weighs fully dressed.
Total Dressed Engine Weight
Auto. - 457.6 lbs. (208 kg) (Flexplate)
Manual - 497.2 lbs (226 kg) (Pressure Plate and Fly Wheel)

I have been getting alot of emails and comments on youtube and people dont believe the motor is that light. I weighed my transmission with converter and it was under 140LBS (TH350 short tail). The total motor set comeplete is under 600 lbs excluding exhaust.

Now I have seen a lot of numbers and variation on how much the KA24DE and SR20DETs actually weight. I never weighed my KA24 when I pulled it, but it wasn't light and the tranny was a bear too. Please post the weight if you actually weighed yours. The numbers I have seen are from 350lbs to 750lbs so with that said I have no idea.

im considering doing the ls1 swap into my 89. ive done some research and the wight difference between the motors (ka and ls1) isnt much, but i dont remember the exact amounts. the vq35 swap is more complicated from what i heard bc its drive by wire. (thats what i was told). i know then they put the vq35 in older maximas they use the pathfinder throttle body and modify it slightly to work, so i dont know if the same process applies there. i was leaning towards the vq swap first, but ive decied to pursue the ls1 now. i found this site, http://www.daftinnovations.com/ that specialize in this stuff and their prices are about the same as hinsons. they have some videos on youtube of them with their ls1 240sx.

XAT racing in Tampa also does LS1 conversions turn key. I haven't seen one in person but they seem to be a higher quality than Hinson and they don't lower the subframe and throw the suspension geometry off like Hinson either.
