Gap between driveshaft and tranny

So my engine is bolted in, tranny x-ember bolted on, driveshaft bearing bolted back up and the shaft is bolted back onto the diff.

now i have a slight gap, maybe 1/4 inch, between the tranny seal and the driveshaft... to better explain it... if it were not bolted to the diff, i could push the shaft another 1/4 inch into the tranny, and there would be a gap by the diff. so i decided to bolt it to the back and deal with the gap later.

heres a pic of whats goin on

now i can only think of a few things this could be.
but since the tranny x member is bolted in nice, i doubt the engine is sitting too far ahead. and since this is supposed to be an easy drop in, i doubt the shaft isnt compatable...

the only thing i can think of is that it has something to do with the little black cup that we took off the back of the tranny before putting it in. the large rubber part of the shaft with the 19mm bolts would have been in the way of the cup (which i assume is to protect the end of the tranny?)

so basically im asking, did i mess something up here? or is this normal?
is that gap going to get my tranny dirty, or should i modify that cup piece to get a better seal on that part?

any help would be great.

it's normal and necessary to have a gap with slip yokes, you should reinstall the dust cover though.
