I cant decide... Help me on this one...

Since I live in CA, and the only way you can legally swap a better motor into any 240 is to have a USDM engine dropped in. I'll go over the details in the legalities thread later tonight.

But, my 2 options are as follows:

LS1 (Z06 vette)
or
2JZGTE (US Supra only)

Since the legalities thread is now closed, I guess I'll explain here.

After speaking with the referee from BAR, you can swap out the KA for another motor, so long as the motor was sold here in the US in a car. Swapping a Chevy LSx is legal since the LSx motors were sold in the Camaro, Vette, Firebird and GTO. Or you can drop in a 2JZGTE from a USDM Supra. The conditions are so long as you buy a motor that is the same production year as your car and you use every single sensor from OBD_.

Since I have a 95 S14, I can use any 2J from a 95 or newer Supra or any LSx swap from 95 and up. The LSx Im looking for if from 2001 or newer.

If I we're to do that, then I would have to convert my S14 from OBD1 to OBD2.

Everyone follow? As long as you have same production year motor in your car and run all OBD_ sensors AND motor was from a US car, you should be fine. Just get the sucker referee'd and get the BAR certificate sticker slapped on the underside of your hood!

BTW, any CARB.E.O. certified parts you buy, must be referee'd, otherwise if u get rolled, they ticket you for having an illegal "modified part".

If you do the LSx motor from a 2001 car you will have to convert. Personaly I will go with the 2J motor.

LS1 = Buy a Corvette
2JZ = maybe

on a side note how would you obtain a Z06 motor and trans anyhow?

motegineon 09-27-2006 09:36 PM

i voted 2jz but the ls would most definately be lighter, which would play a huge roll if the car is going have any balance..

Hinson supercars has a complete swap kit for a LS1x swap with a T56 tranny and custom drive shaft, etc etc.

Tech2 motorsports has the mounting kit for 2J but mounting only, I still need wiring custom shaft etc etc.

The easier of the 2 would be the LSx swap getting legalized that is. Dont get me wrong, I love the 2J, but electrical wiring would cause great hell. Its just as bad as an RB swap.

Yes the LSx swap is way lighter, Hinson weighed the final swap (spare tire and battery in the rear, no exhaust and 5 gallons of gas) including the T56 tranny would be 120+ lbs lighter than an S14 with a stock KA.

The 2J would weigh in at about 677 lbs, about 77 lbs heavier than the stock KA, but well over 200 lbs more than the LS1.

The big thing about the 2J is, immense power on a stock bottom end. The big thing about the LS1 is that it gives u a nice 35 mpg highway, not to mention 300+ hp & torque at the wheel with no mods. Drop in a set of LS6 cams and ECU and its a 400 hp & torque beast (according to some of the guys at LSTech claim)

I dunno, Im so stumped on this... both swaps including motor and tranny add up to about the same $ involved.

LS1 for the win, straight up. i mean, ****, lighter engine for the same price? with close to equal potential? and the V-8 sounds so ****ing beautiful?

Bryan 09-28-2006 03:15 AM

I say LS2, **** anything else!!!

RuizXIII 09-28-2006 05:46 AM

Forget you guys, I say LS7 the best 'vette motor around FTW

Zenki_SliderS14 09-28-2006 08:58 AM

Whichever is better for you man. Personally, id hit the Ls1, seems pretty original and if its lighter then Light is good

LS7 is a bad a$$ motor, but with the money spent on that, I coulda bought 2 or even 3 LS1 motors or even go as far as building up just one LS1 and crank out mad HP & torque. Brian over at Hinson has built a 6.71 sec FD, and its all motor with what I consider an extremely mild build up. I wonder how my S14 would be like with the HSC FD LS1 under the hood...

Most likely end up tweaking the chassis...

alot of ppl on ls1tech.com are doing this swap. im almost finsh with mine . you can get alot of info on the site. from bolt in kits to DIY everything. and the swap isn't really hard. some things were a PITA thou. just search that site if you need any info.

NiSmO Knight 10-01-2006 09:50 PM

Since Hinson already has the all the necessities available for the swap to make it as painless as possible, I might as well go that route... Jus gotta come up with the $ to do it.

Know where I can get a deal on an LS1 with a T56 tranny?

twojz240 10-02-2006 09:03 AM

im doing the 2jz into my 240

fouz 10-02-2006 03:23 PM

i got mine from a local junk yard. 2002 50,000 mile ls1/t56 with full harnes and cpu for $3800. the asking price was 4k, and they rung it up so there was no taxes. out the door 3800. they got alot of em around here. so im sure you got some at your local yard.

talk to hinson first. there are a few mistakes in the priceing. he seemed to be a really good guy and was helpfull on some products/questions in which i didnt even buy from him.
