Need Advice Getting Engine Wiring Harness Through Firewall

I have disconnected the engine wiring harness and tried to get it out of the cockpit through the firewall. There is a large fan unit in front of the hole that the harness goes through. I took the dash out to get access to it. I unbolted the entire fan unit and cannot get it to drop out. Seems like there is something holding it in place on the top left side of the fan housing. I dropped the fan out to lighten the unit. I see there are three clips in the front and two clips in the back that may separate the bottom of the fan housing from the top. If I remove those clips and drop the bottom of the fan housing will I have enough room to get the engine harness pulled through the firewall? It looks like it will be a tough job getting those clips back in place on the firewall side of the fan housing.

Bad News is I broke the left side of the dash trying to get it over the steering wheel and steering wheel height adjustment lever. Now I have to find a replacement dash. Most import thing too is trying to get dash back on. Do I have to remove the steering wheel height adjustment lever?

Anyone have a spare dash for sale for my 89 240sx?

Thank You!

Ow that sucks you broke your dash. The harness will go thru the hole easily without removing any of those things, you just have to do it one plug at a time and have someone grab the plugs as you feed them thru(hopefully your feeding the ECU ends thru the firewall not the engine side).

I will try that, but there is no room behind the fan unit. The hole is right there and the ecu side of the harness just doesn't look like it will pass through the hole. I will try it. Harness is stiff and curved on ecu side. The ecu plug looks like it will not have the room either to go through firewall.

Sure wish removal directions I down loaded and Nissan's work shop manual were better written.

Thanks for your reply!

I took out my RB20 wiring pretty easily...did it with a buddy of mine.

take off the plastic connector that looks like an L, and it will go threw much easier, tape it back on once the harness is threw.

yeah I was just gonna say I cut mine off(that plastic thing)and trashed it, and it allows the plug to be turned parallel to the wires and easily slipped thru.

The SOB came right out!

I may try to swap some of my 240 parts with a junk yard for a dash or just sell them. There must be a market for these parts like the engine, trans, old ecu.
