RB20DET swap questions
I know you guys hate this but I promise were I am in Iraq time is very limited on the computer, otherewise I'd use the site to study it up. I have had the swap completed for a few months now and finally put on the body kit when the orders to go to Iraq came down. Now my baby is sitting in a garage all lonely for the next few months. When I come back I will have a bit of money and wan this project to go to new extremes. I want to be pulling out at least 400hp to the wheels. Please guys fill me in on where to start online because thats my only way of getting those things now to be waiting on me when I get home, and like I said time is limited as it is. Thanks ahead of time.

Get ahold of Carl H on www.racebread.com He has an RB20DET with about 400 at the wheels (Before it died). He will be your best source.

Good Luck with trying to get a relaible 400hp out of an RB20 In 97 I had a R32 Skyline w/ pistons, Rods, Headgasket, P&P head, Manifolds port matched, TO4S Turbo with tubular manifold, Running MOTEC, 1000cc injectors, let's just say it was built right and Tuned right I had 490Hp to the wheels this is with all my parts being new and I did beat the crap out of it on occasion but it did not last long at boosting 1.5 the engine ripped apart. That is average boost for a T04S. RB20 is just a crappy engine compared to other engines like the SR, RB26, even the KA. I have been through several CA's, only 2 SR's, 5 RB20's, and an RB26. I have had all of them built to some degree. Just my $0.02

Thanks for the heads up guys. And when it comes to experimenting with different engines I just wish I had the money it takes to do that. What do you think it is about the RB20 that makes it crap like that? I figure the SR would go before the RB does simply because it is an alluminum block as oppossed to the RB's Cast Iron. Input is appreciated.

On a safe tune, and a good set up you should easily go over 400whp on an RB20. With a turbo like a GT35R or even a GT30R you should get 400whp at safe boost levels.

You can reach that power however just like the CA the RB has the tendancy to over heat, at high boost the head sometimes lifts, Like I said I have been through 5 RB's they were all built (Same car) I had the works as far as cooling and, tune, there is just something about them that make them not want to hold together I DO WANT TO MAKE THIS CLEAR I DID NOT SAY THEY ARE CRAP just crappy compared to some other engines. The same displacement as the little sister engine (SR) but more cyclinders there are alot of things that make it inferior to the SR but like I said fully built at 490hp at the wheels on a completely stripped skyline and it is hard to touch, R32 weight is comparable to that of the (SILVIA S14) the 240 is little heavier than the Silvia. just constructed little differently.
With the right building and the right tuning you can make the RB decent for a while but it wont last you would be better off with a 26 or SR. |

How many Built RB20's have you had? how many built cars have you had? I am not being an ass I am curious? high power means more possible problems with things breaking just another fact.. Morrison you can get 400hp out of your RB20 just take good care of it and you should be fine. Like I said the engine is tempermental take it for what it is worth, I am just giving you my experiances. |
Originally posted by silviasichigo You misunderstand I have had 5 RB20's and when I pushed power through them they blew and yes they were all built. You don't see many high power RB20's in japan THEY DO EXSIST but they don't last. that engine is riddled with problems and It was over a course of time not just 97' Most guys here in japan swap to RB26 just a fact..... How many Built RB20's have you had? how many built cars have you had? I am not being an ass I am curious? high power means more possible problems with things breaking just another fact.. I know first hand that RB20's are very problematic and tempermental motors, I went through 3 of them in under a year til I was able to finally make it as reliable as possible but still only lasted another 4 months (20psi on stock turbo and motor, 120 race gas and a tuned ECU). If I had been willing to spend the money on a built block I'm confident that I have the resources to make 500+whp last, but thats just specualtion. |
Well there is nothing wrong with that I did see that you had RB powered 240. I as well build all my motors up until recently the S14 I am driving was built by a good friend while I was indisposed. I was merely stating that the RB is not a good platform for Power it never has been and most likely never will be. Most of my Japanese friend sell it off and get the RB26 that is why I can go to a junk yard and get an RB20 for $150~ just not a good platform for power
To Morrison 240 if you can get your hands on a RB25/26 I would do it IF YOU WANT POWER OVER 450WHP to last. that is just a suggestion Just a suggestion everyone talks crap about SR this KA that RB this (NOT REFERRING TO YOU NISMO241 just mean in general) I have had all of these engines and built all of these engines......forgive me except the KA and I would say you are better off IN THE LONG RUN getting an SR or RB25/26 that is JUST MY OPINION Michael |
Well i just wrote a check today for a SR, I think it will fit my needs.:bigok:

I hope thing work out fo ryou good luck!!
