Question s13 or s14?

i have a decent question. i have a 95 240sx and am looking to do an engine swap for a turbo sr20det. my question is, i have a s14 but would i be able to put in a s13 sr20det or do i have to have the s14 engine. i am curious because the price difference in these engines is a little over a thousand dollars. thanks.

I do believe any sr20det will fit (s13.s14.s15)

But you might want someone else's opinion...I'm not basing this on anything other than what I have heard.

Any motor will fit. S14 will be newer than all red top S13 SR20DET's, but there were some blacktop S13 SR20DETs produced at the same time S14's were being produced. These black top S13 SR's will be a little more expensive than red tops - they came in 180SX's and do not have variable valve timing.

If you're planning on upgrading anyway, the red top is probably your best choice. I believe the S14 has a slightly better turbo, but its head design is considered to be less ideal. The S13 red top uses the low-port design. I haven't thrown either of these heads on a flow bench so you may want to seek a second opinion.

The heads are the same, excluding VTC, but the flow characteristics are different due to the high port and low port intake manifolds.

Is it just the intake manifolds, or the position of the intake ports on the head? I was a casual observer on the SER lists for a while, and it seemed that there was a distinction between the two and they always referred to it as a high or low port head.

I'd say S13 redtop.

If you plan on keeping it completely stock then you may be better off with an S14 or S15 motor. But the price difference for those motors will give you more power if you spend it on upgrades for the S13 motor.
