SR20DE converted to SR20DET in S15
 

Not to sound completely like a NOOB....I've done some researching and haven't found a definitive answer.

What all is going to be needed to complete the transformation?

I have the SR20DE, 5 spd manual and would like to make it a SR20DET.

At the present time, I'd like to just run it at factory specs for the power/torque. Also, are the Spec S ECU's tunable or will just replacing it with a Spec R ECU be less of a headache? Does it matter that my Spec S is a 5 spd vs. the Spec R's 6 spd as far as the ECU is concerned?

well since your in japan you can since the entire s15 sr20det motor+tranny+ wireing and ecu together for a way better price when we over here


its all bolt on and plug in no customization needed all you need to buy seperate is a downpipe wich is also cheap over there used lol. its very easy it can be done in a couple hours.

also you have to decide if you want to use the factory side mount intercooler which bolts up or a aftermarket front mount which you need to do some cutting

talk to rob at eaw... this route is going to be much more work and not even worth it. the s15 electronics are more advanced than that of the older generation Sr's

nah everything should be bolt on as long as he buys the det motor set with harness and ecu

I think I'll just drive this one around for awhile until its paid off or closer to paying it off and then sell it. Then just go out and buy a Spec R as there are other upgrades done to the Chassis too. Its totally not worth all the headaches and money to turbo this one. Unless its possible to do that complete swap for a reasonable price....around $3k or less. What transmission is recommended since I've read that the 6 spd tranny is **** in the S15?

lol i can get that motor here in the US for like $3k im 100% sure u can find it there for ALOT cheaper. im assuming you will do the work? anyway onlything im not sure about is the paperwork not sure if it will be a problem in japan.

then engine is held in by a couple bolts a few hoses and some connectors its really really simple to do

I would hope I could find it cheaper, but finding it and dealing with people here can be a challenge itself!
Yeah, I do all my own work (or find friends that can assist me). Labor charges are dumb to pay for stuff I can do.

Who's Rob at EAW? I'm curious to find out the difference in electronics. I have no doubts that the S15 is more advanced than early gen SR's, but if a complete eng/trans/harness/ecu swap is performed...why wouldn't it be a plug n play swap?

well rob is kinda our last resort...

you go out the POL gate make a left at the first light and drive for about a 1/4 mile and you will see a ton of skylines and 180sx's setting on the left hand side of the road. you will see a big EAW sign, that is rob.

however we primarily buy things from yahoo auction and upgarage.

no that is not hard at all.. for some reason i thought you were talking about an state side sr20de lol.

you can turbo your engine very easily with parts from the turbo version.... you don't have to swap anything and there is nothing special about a 6 speed tranny over a 5 speed in relation to those transmissions.

as far as the electronics.. the change came primary in the valve-train section
