Bead seperation on the tire

Hey guys,

I had a flat the other day. I didn't really look at it 'cause I was on the way to work and didn't have time. I took it into Les Schwab and when they brought it back out they said it wasn't a puncture, but that the bead had just seperated. He put some bead sealant on the tire and put it back on. It seems fine now.

I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Is this frequent when sliding a car around? I don't actually consider myself a drifter, but sometimes I get it sideways comin through a corner. I didn't really think it could pull the tire off though.... btw, it's the front passenger side tire and it's a 215/40-ZR17. Not sure of the brand 'cause I didn't buy it (Federal, I think)....

Thanks for the info....

wut size rim is it? The tire might be to small of a width or to big of a width for the rim and thats why It seperated from the bead. Or it wasnt put on properly.

hmmm, I'm not sure of the size of the rim. That's what happens when I wasn't the one who bought them. They were installed at Les Schwab, so they "should" have put the right size tire on the rim. But someone could have screwed it up... The tire was a replacement for a bald tire on the car before I bought it (still had an open diff). The rest are Toyo Proxy FZ4s. This tire also has much more tread than the rest.

Hmm..and all the rest of the tires are doing just fine? Which wheel is this? FR, FL? RL, RR? Another possibility could be that someone put to much air into, to high of a psi...or 2 low. Im not sure..im not that big on tires.

Yea, all the other tires are fine as far as keeping pressure. It's the FR (passenger side) tire.

Thanks for the ideas HyJynx. Lemme know if you have any more....

This is pretty weird because the rest of your tires are doing just fine. Im starting to think that it was misplaced, maybe not enough bead sealent, or could be a faulty tire. :dunno: Did you have a different tire on this rim before your current one?

focalguy 11-21-2003 10:49 AM

Yea, it might not have had enough bead sealent. It had a toyo tire (like the rest) on it up until July when I bought it. It was on the rear axle until it was rotated, but that's been a few months. The thing that seems weird is that I've driven hard on it for a while and then one day it just goes flat. I wasn't even driving hard that day.

Well, it doesn't sound too common, so if it doesn't happen again I guess I'll be happy.

Yea ive never heard of someones tire just unsealing, did you check your tire pressure that day or a couple days before? It coulda been pretty flat and get unsealed like that. Just a thought.

focalguy 11-21-2003 10:56 AM

Yea, that's a definate possibility since I just about never check the tire pressure. I know, :nono: .... so that could have been it.

-HyJynX- 11-21-2003 12:39 PM

Yea, thats the most logical one i can think of. You gatta check your tire pressure every now and then buddy:thumb: Espically if you drift a lil here and there.
