car acting funny, need help

guys,

my car is acting weird. Just started couple of days ago. When I started my engine, the car was shaking alot. So i popped the hood and saw that my motor was swaying from side to side. I went to my muffler and my exhaust sounded like something was clogged. My mom's nissan had a similar problem the week before. Her car would shake when turned on and her emission light came on. We replaced her cat converter and her car is fine. I'm thinking it might be the same for me too but my emission light isn't on. And yesterday, when I tried to turn on the engine, it wouldn't start. I got it to work and was trying to see what was wrong. I stepped on my accelerator and when the engine was revving past 1500rpm, it sounded and felt smooth. but when it would idle around 500rpm, it sounded like a tug boat with shake. Please help. I don't know what to look for.

i personally wouldnt take the chance. forgot to say this, see if every cylinder has spark then go check fuel delivery.

pull the plugs and see if any are corroded. if not any, do a power balance test. pull off a injector wire connector one at a time until you see no change in engine behaviour

I'm having a problem similar to this one. I accidently wired my spark plugs wrong and then it started. I will check that all the plugs are still OK then ill post again or edit this one.

I just finished checking the car for some things you guys listed.

-spark plugs are ok, along with the wire
-checked the MAF sensor and seems fine
-ran the car w/o the cat to see if it was clogged. the problem was still there

hey RE037, can you give me more detailed instructions on how to check my fuel injectors? I was going to check them but wasn't 100% sure on how to check them out.

thanks.

I think what we all need is a good Tune-Up..... If it doesnt fix the problem at least it makes us feel all fuzzy inside

edit: Also, try running some of that engine cleaner junk through your engine, I hear sea foam is a good one.

And... I checked my plugs and mine are just fine too

sure....

first turn on the car. itll be shaky like you said, so just bare with it. on top of each fuel injector is a wire harness form the ecu. now disconnect the injector from cylinder number 1. if you see a change in the shakiness then the fuel delivery is fine and its doing its job. now reconnect it and go on to number 2 and so forth until you find one that results in no change to the shaking and crappy idle. now if you do find one, something is preventing the cylinder from getting fuel be whether a stuck injector or a bad harness from the ecu or any other crazy **** that may happen (considering you said that spark plugs and wires are fine). so yeah, gl... ^^

oh yeah, +1 on the seafoam in the gas tank and through the brake booster.
