Choosing a 240SX

Hi all,

I am planning to get a 240SX. Any idea which year/model is better? What to watch for? I personally like the look of 98'. But, ... the price wasn't in my budget....

Please give me some idea. Thanks.

Well, it depends on what exactly you're planning to do with it. S13 240SX's (89-94) have three body styles available: coupe, fastback, and convertible (the only model available in '94). Also, the 89 and 90 S13's had a SOHC engine, the 91+ cars are all DOHC. S14 240SX's (95-98) are only available as coupes, and there were minor differences between the 95-96 and 97-98 models, mainly in the front body styling and headlights.

In terms of the motor, they're all the same car. And if you're planning an SR20DET swap (aren't we all) it really doesn't make too much of a difference. S13's are about 100lbs lighter than S14's, I believe. 91 models were prone to timing chain guide problems. The S13 fastback has slightly better chassis rigidity than the coupe. HUD units were available in S13's, I believe in 93 only.

Any specific questions you have?

they don't all have hud. and the coupe is more rigid, but the hatch has better weight distribution.

Fisrt of all, thanks for your info.

I guess I am with all of you, planning on the engine swap when the time comes.

If I plan to do the swap soon, I guess I need to swap the engine, tranny and ECU, right? Anything else? And, what hp do I actually expect from a SR20DET? 200HP?

I find a few good 240s, but, they are automatics. Is it difficult to swap it to manual? How much do I expect to spend on tranny swap? Would it be a better deal if I swap the whole set like engine, ECU, tranny....etc.?

What about the 6-spd tranny swap? same cost?

I find the following ad.:

1991 240sx SE with 1993 SR20DET (200 hp, 203 lb-ft). Very quick. $7000 with shock wheels.

Yeah, not much info. (The car seems stock and the body condition
seems good too.) But, is it a good deal?

Again, thank yo ufor your attention.

heads up display. it puts a digital readout of speed on the windshield....got forbid the windhsield gets a crack, they are about $700 to replace because they have a special piece of reflective film on them.

and 7K for a freshly swapped 240 isn't really a deal....depends on what else is done to the car...find out some more info and i will let you know if it is worth it.

hmmm...

truthfully i wanted the s-14 also but the price is out of hand. so 3 years later i ended up moving from my 4 runner to my 90' 240sx. I love it. if you're gonna swap the motor dont worry about it being single or dual cam. if you get a single cam and you're gonna swap engines... just go to a junkyard and jack the power steering off the dual cam. The s-13 with the current jdm tail lights put some tein coil overs and some rims and you'll have a sweet looking car.

Dont get the s-15 motor. it's not worth it. it has 6 gears but big deal. sr-20det black top. intake, straightpipe, exauhst... you'll be smoking preludes like blunts! you'll give the s2000s a run for their money and you'll smash civics like fortune cookies =) RSX-type s? no problem! smoke 'em! =)
