crap.........is this bad?

Ok so, my cars an 89 hatch, and I got it really cheap, and when I changed the coolant it was brown, so I figured yea its probably just a rusty radiator. So I changed the coolant, put in 50/50 mix water/coolant, and drove it home. Looked at it today (about 4 days later) and the coolant was brown again. Should I just drain it, and maybe run a hose through it and leave the valve open to try and flush it out?

yes. i dont think you got rid of all the old coolant the first time.
the engine also has a coolant drain plug. check out the fsm. or just keep doing the hose thing for like 20 or so minutes. make sure to close the drain plug on the radiator everynow and then to get it circulating. some ppl would use distilled water so you wont get calcium build up.

they make those hose flush kits that just tap into your heater line, i used one on my moms blazer (which are notorious for rusting out due to a coolant chemical flaw from the factory), and works great. Adding distilled water would be cheap insurance too!

i flushed out my cooling system today, and it was super brown

i started the car, turned the heater on blast and on hot for about 30 secs for heater core to open up, then i shut the car off and popped the radiator cap, drained out all the coolant from the drain **** on the bottom, then used a water hose and stuck it through the top and let it drain into the bucket, i wiated till the water coming out was clear then i shut the drain ****, let it fill up, then opened it again and did that couple times just to get it clean most of it out

then i took out and emptied the overflow box, filled it with a little bit of water, put in some coolant system flush from kragen and filled the rest with water, then i started the car and let it bubble up to get the air out of the lines, then i added more water and closed the cap and was good to go, this stuff is supposed to stay in your radiator for about 3-6 hours on normal driving, then you drain and reflush and add regular coolant

after doing that, my temperature guage seems to be lower and the car warms up much faster

^ yep... plenty of fresh water is all you need to flush it out. additives simply help the water do it's job better. you basically just seriously extended the life of your motor.
