finally found the cause

my dad got me a 240 for christmas but it had a problem the oil was mixing with water, he got the whole head rebuilt and worked and new gaskets thinkin this would solve the problem.. no dice so he changes the oil a few times, still milky so christmas comes and goes and its not running then we rip it back apart and find a crack in the timing chain cover right next to one of the water jets and thats how water was getting mixed with the oil apparently the chain tensioner or chain guard broke on one side and the chain was knocking against the caseing, but the question is could you weld the crack and just get a new timing chain kit or would it be a better idea to get a new timing chain cover? we got the cover out but we're trying to save as much money as possible and still have a reliable solution. thanks for any advice on which idea would be best/cheapest in the long run.

I would say get the a new timing chain kit and possibly cover. Just in case. You could always just get the timing chain kit and if the problem isnt solved then get the cover replaced.

but the case is already pretty shot i was asking if it would work if i just got the crack thats already in the caseing next to one of the water jets welded shut or just replace the case altogether

I would replace the whole case altogether, you never know how bad the rest of the case is. And btw, the problem with timing chain/guide is very common. But if you let it go on to long, the cover will get trashed, like yours.
