how did you learn to swap?

How did you learn to swap your engine and tranny? did you go to school for it? did it read it off the internet? or did a friend teach you? i want to do my own engine swap, but i had no previous experience, i dont know what i can do to learn, i really dont feel like paying someone to do it, and at the end of the day, you still know nothing but drive your car home. theres a video for sell on this forum, its called shift 180? is it a good video? can a noob like me who never had any previous experience with a car other than changing tires and changing oil really do it just from that?

I haven't done one but I really want to. Anyway, heavy throttle has a really good read. A video would probably be the best because you see what parts need to be removed and installed and what not. Sometimes pictures don't help that much.

if you are talking about swaping the same engine (DE to DE) it'll be a snap just remember to label everything and you should be fine.

i kinda tought myself i just watched horse power tv alot, and went at it and hoped for the best. as long as you have the rite tools you'll be okay.

when you begin, get a lot of zipper bags. Start labeling them with the main parts you take off and all the hardware that goes with it. Get some masking tape and a sharpie to label wiring harnesses. If you start going internally into the engine, make sure you know the torque specs and get a toque wrench. It's not really that hard once you get started. Be prepared to break little things though. Old fasteners and crap like that may strip or break.

Be organized, that's all I can say.

I learned from my friend, took a auto class in HS and college and read A LOT of info on the internet.

Factory service manual

heavythrottle.com can help out a little bit, and IIRC there there is a FSM for a S14 SR around the internet somewhere.

It is not as easy as we make it seem, because you WILL encounter a problem here and there. Takes time, dedication, knowledge, common sense, time and money.

Extra tools needed, money to fix problems(need belts, water pump, small parts needed, broke something and need it, etc)

Better to be safe then sorry, so have a little extra money around...that's what I meant.

An extra 300 wouldn't hurt, but If I were to do another engine swap(was swapping a RB20 in)I would have at least an extra 600 around.

I have MSN but I'm ganna hit the hay right now, my email is o_hyjynx_o@hotmail.com is you want to add me. I will probably be on tomorrow night.

i've never done a swap, but jack stands prolly help, maybe something else to lift the engine -- or something to help getting the engine out.
