Manual to Automatic ECU swap

Hey I just read on 240sxforums.com that you can lose the speed governor and raise the rev limiter to 7100 by swaping the manual DOHC ECU for the Automatic DOHC ECU. Has anybody ever heard of this before? It would completely depend on how Nissan maps their A/F ratios right. I'm sure I could swap it out, but it might run like **** because of only 4 gears for the automatic and 5 for the manual. If anyone has a clue help me out please.

If your talking about swaping the ECU's it's a direct swap. I know because i have an auto ECU in my car, but it was an auto to start and i did swap in a 5-speed trans and try the 5-speed's ECU and everything worked fine, so i would assume it would be the same.

I looked it up and read a little more and found out the 91 model is the only one that does this. So I guess I'll be in the junk yards this weekend looking for a 91 auto. Just so everyone is straight I have a manual transmission right now.

Not to be rude, but this does not belong in the member's ride section.

Here's a cheaper and easier way to complete remove the rev limiter AND speed governor.

I've never heard about an auto ecu swap changing any of that. I'm doubtful it would even work.

I've read that thead many times and I can't believe people would actually encourage people to do that. That is so dangerous I can't even begin. Do you even know what the cops will do to you if they think for one minute that you tampered with your govenor? Besides going to jail for a couple of months. The people on this forum are between the ages of 14 and 50. Anybody who has been driving for ony a couple of years has no business going out in the middle of the day and trying to hit 140mph on public roads especially when they are looking at their tach trying to figure out how fast they are going. I would much rather do an ECU swap that is completely legal and I still have all of my guages intact.

Your gauges will only turn off when the switch is turned on. I don't drive excessive speeds like that on the road, but it is still nice to be able to. I go to the track sometimes, and while I rarely reach that speed (okay, never, lol) in the quarter, it's still nice to be able to know you can. I've never heard that messing with a governor was illegal, but I am not saying you are wrong. I live in Washington, I doubt a cop will ever find out about it, unless he looks under my car for some reason, and notices an extra wire, which is unlikely for a cop to notice anyhow. It would be impossible for him to know that this one extra wire shouldn't be there.

I understand the want to be able to go that fast( I did post the question), but I still want all of my guages to work while I do it. And no I never get that fast in the 1/4. All I was asking is will it work? If it does, great all my guages work and I get to go as fast as I want, if it doesn't I'm out 100 bucks for the ECU. I found on from a 91 auto yesterday now all I have to do is pick it up and install it. I don't think it would do any physical damage to the engine. And yeah your probably right about the location of this thread.

wait now im confused, i own a 90 5-speed and your saying that i can put in a 90 auto ecu, and have my gov. gone and it will rev higher. how so? in an automatic the car is made to shift short, so wouldnt the ecu wierd out? wouldnt the auto have the gov. too? and my last ? what happens when you hit 5th gear since an auto only has 4?

yes your speed governor will be gone, I have made my speedometer's needle touch where the 3rd # from the left is on the trip odometer is (000.0), about the rev limiter I am not goining to rev my motor to 7100rpm on purpose just to find out.
The auto ecu only sends signals to the trans to make it shift if you have a 5-speed it will just send the signals and get no responce.
also about when you get in 5th and the auto's 4th, you should learn more about it before you type somthing like that. It's not like you made you auto trans into a 5-speed it's a totaly different thing.

Where did you hear that from?? That is a new problem. I've never heard of that, but I've only really researched it for 3 weeks. How cold below freezing??

alright.....the way i was thinking about it, was in an auto the ecu was only set for 4 gears, not 5, so i didnt know if you hit 5th gear if the fuel would shut off or what would happen. i know what i need to know about my car i dont know anything about putting auto ecu's into a 5 speed so instead of jumpin on me about it maybe you could just answer my ?'s, it was an honest question dude. i was trying to learn but i cant unless you explain it!!!

I have this problem but i didn't think it could be the ECU....damn.. ohwell summer's comin' soon

and about the 4th and 5th gear thing s13_peacekeeper, I'm saying that your ECU doesn't control when your car goes into 5th you do, if it was an auto (trans) it would register the info about the speed and rev's but since it thinks that your car is in park or netural and it won't cut off the fuel at 5000rpm. I hope that makes sense to you. And I didn't jump on you, If I had of it would of looked like this: YOU SHOULD LEARN MORE ABOUT IT etc.
I learned from experience and I expect most people to do the same, that is why I said "that you should learn more about it on your own".
