Driveable Differences: 89-90 vs. 91-94

I know the DOHC is 155bhp, 160ft/lbs and the SOHC is 140bhp, 152ft/lbs, but for a daily driver, will I be able to tell the difference?

Im gonna look at this auto 89 fastback with 151k miles. The only reason Im thinking of getting an auto is because its only $1,150.

If it was a decent DOHC manual, I was gonna keep it NA, but since its a SOHC automatic...Im thinking of swapping.

I just noticed...I have only driven SOHCs so I cant really tell you what hte difference is ganna be, but im sure its minimal. At least for a daily driver.

i have a 92 manual dohc, and i raced a 91 manual sohc and whopped it's ass. stock vs. stock btw...it was really no contest.

Ive never driven DOHC before either (my 94 civic was SOHC non-vtec, which was an auto). So Im wondering if I'll be able to even realize its not DOHC....

maybe a sohc swap ^_^

i have driven an 89 DOHC (it was my girlfriends car that was origanally a sohc but we swapped in the dohc when her timing chain went) and my 90 sohc, and there is an enourmous differance. The DOHC has much much more power. If you are not planning on doing the swap, definatly get the ka24de

Great...........

I own a 1990 240sx SOHC and I have driven DOHC 240's as well mine is much faster then a DOHC now but I have to admit stock V.S. stock that you will notice some diffrence at around 4000 rpm the DOHC seems to have a little better pep at a higher RPM but off the line there was no difference, but at a higher RPM that's where the DOHC starts to shine and seems to pull a little better. If you are going to buy the SOHC a nice simple HOTSHOT performance header with a 2 3/4 inch exhaust and a HKS cold air intake will easily help you outperform a stock DOHC. If I were you I would buy the cheaper one SOHC and use the money you saved to do an engine with an SR20 or RB25. Either way good luck:thumb:

I have a 92 DOHC 240 and have a bunch of buddies with SOHC 240s and have raced them numerous times. Everytime we race, I am always plenty far ahead. My one buddy has a 90 240 with Injen CAI, Hotshot header, Apex'i N1 dual cat back, Catco cat, and a bunch of other goodies. He took it to the drag strip and ran 17's consistently. I ran my bone stock 240 and pulled a 16.4 as my best. Usually ran 16.5-16.6 consistently. So a SOHC with some go-fast stuff will not outrun a stock DOHC.

Maybe your friends need to shapen up on the 5 speed driving:dunno: I got many modifications done to my 240 now, but even when I didn't before, just with a hotshot header a straight flow magnaflow exhaust system, a HKS cold air intake and a port polished intake, I was taking out stock DOHC 240's all day long. It doesn't take much work to get a SOHC to go faster then a DOHC.

s240r 03-12-2004 02:19 PM

if you put the same things on each the dohc would kill the sohc

Yeah, thanks. I bought it already. Its actually a 90 240sx, and of course it needs some work. And although I would have liked a manual DOHC, its an auto SOHC. If I'd had the manual DOHC, I probably would have went N/A. But since its a auto SOHC...more than likely its gonna be swapped.

I personaly know some one that ran 15.7 ina sohc 1989 240sx, even has time slips. I dont care what you guys say. O yea he had intake and exhaust btw.
