I think we all worry about the car too much, but its great to get all the knowledge you can. It is good to leave the overdrive off. Its like the 4th gear in a manual car. It also saves gas as you said and the only time you should really take it off is if you towing anything or have I think over 700-800 pounds in the car. Other than that it should remain on. Also when you floor it, the car in reality is taking the overdrive off to "downshift" the gear.

i've been reading most sites and they say to make sure that you have overdrive on. It saves gas is its usually reason. Well I would want to save gas at these prices.

Who said to take the OD off on the highway, it should be the other way.

thanks for the advice. before i really understood it i didnt really use it. i noticed it revved real high on the freeway, lol. later i started just using it on the freeway, but i thought that the car should be getting better gas mileage than it did, and that i was getting ALOT better on the freeway. so now i just leave it on.

Good choice and this way it puts less strain on your tranny.

if u have an auto ur overdrive is on all the time, when u push the button to turn it off the light comes on to remind you that overdrive is off

from what i know, does nothing to your car, just saves on gas a lot

overdrive on = shifts to 4th gear, then 5th gear....

overdrive off = shifts only to 3rd gear...

Most are, except for upper echelon(sp?) luxury and sports cars. I think it's kinda like this:

L1 (First gear only)
L2 (First and second gears only, depending on vehicle speed.)
D w/o OD (First through third gears only.)
D with OD (All four gears used.)
