Potential 240sx owner

So here's the story:
My friend is looking for a car that's relatively cheap, yet can be modified to go fast and handle well. I suggested a 240sx. He doesn't know too much about working on cars, so I figure I can help him (and I want a project car :D). I've got access to a shop with tools and expertise.

Basically, he's planning on buying a '91-'94 S13 fastback for $2-4k. We'll get it in good running condition so he has some transportation while he saves up for the engine/tranny swap, mods, etc.

Anyway, I'm just starting the research (well, I read Project Silvia in SCC), so I'm looking for any good links/basic info that I'll need. Some basic questions:
-We're planning an SR20DET swap, is this fairly common among 240sx owners? What's the difference between black top, red top, etc?
-What's the estimated cost to get an SR20DET and decent brakes and suspension?
-Can an SR20DET pass MD emissions testing? (With a high-flow cat)

Thanks for the help.

-SR swap is VERY very common, the only difference between a S13 SR redtop and a S13 SR black top is the top lol, theyre are some minimal differences inside, but no power difference.
-SR=2500+shipping, a good brake/suspension set up=2k-4k, matters on how far you wanna go and what kind of products
-SRs cant pass anywhere in the US, unless of course that state doesnt have emissions. People go to a crooked smogger and give them extra money to pass them.

And please, in the future Search, all these questions could have been found by searching/researching

an annotation to what JynX said, it also depends on whether or not ur state conducts visual inspections as well. i've heard of several methods what would supposedly pass a sniffer test, but if the inspectors look under the hood, u could be toast. damn, i'm from MD, so u'd think i'd know.:o the last time i had a car tested was back in '97, and i don't remember what all they did.:dunno:
