MODERATOR
One that moderates. One that arbitrates or mediates. One who presides over a meeting, forum, or debate.

ARBITRATOR
A person chosen to settle the issue between parties engaged in a dispute.

MEDIATOR
One that mediates, especially one that reconciles differences between disputants.

None of these definitions of what a true moderator include: The thread was going nowhere and nowhere fast.

Basically, your job is to mediate. Settle disputes and keep people in check, not shut down a forum because of personal preference or because it "was going nowhere and nowhere fast."
