What can I do with worn thread on valve cover?
 

hey. yesterday I found there is oil leaking from my valve cover so I tried to screw the bolt harder. But I I think I had over screwed it and the bolt just keep turning. what can I do to get the bolt back on tight?

Re-thread, with a tap and die set...... Did you ever think of replacing the gasket instead of stipping the bolt?

I have changed my gasket recently so I doubt its that

u could also get some jb weld put it in the hole and re tap it like the first guy sad. quck jb weld is good for that job

you can also get a helicoil insert... what it encludes is a spring looking insert that you ut in the stripped hole and then put in a new bold... means a little drilling to get the helicoil in...
drill out the hole to the right size... the package will tell you what size drill bit to use... then insert the replacement thread ( i use a little high temp epoxy or jb weld to hold the heli coil secure) let dry then put in the new bold tighten to spec and off i go...

Just a question... did you tighten down the valve cover in the correct order when you changed the vc gasket?

eh..... I forgot. might not....... maybe that's why.

well can anyone tell me how to rethread with jb weld? I have never used it before. should I put on the bolt or the hole?

jb weld is a like a epoxy- two part glue. So it's not for rethreading it's for patching up the hole. You can get the stuff for like 5 bucks at any local hardware store.

try quiksteel... it's like JB Weld but more of a putty/playdoh type feel. maybe you can get a small amount, wrap it around the screw, put the screw into the hole, then remove the screw (to keep the threads and not have the screw stuck in there as well) and let the quiksteel dry overnight before replacing the screw... Might work :thumb:
