what octane should I use?

According to the gas door on my '92 240, for best performance I should use premium gas. But I have done a little studying in the past and most people say unless you are running a real high performance engine, there is literally no power difference at all, nor is there a gas mileage difference. It has the stock ka24de in it. What do you all think?

i use premium, which is 91 ron here in cali. gets about 1~2 more mpg city than 87 in my experience. the car runs smoother and has better throttle response, especially in summer heat.

I use 91 octane fuel (the highest grade available here). I just do it because the manual says so.

I've ran from 87 to 93 and havent noticed any performance gains and VERY minimal MPG gains. Just stick with 87 or 89 and you should be good.

well price diff from 87 to 91 is about 20 cents. so with an avergae 1.5 mpg (in my experience) gain, thats an extra 23~ miles to the tank compared to 87. so the cost of a full tank of 91 over 87 would be 15 gallons (ill use 15 as no one would drive until absolutely empty) times 20 cents is $3.00, which is the current price of gas per gallon (at least here in socal). in the end, it adds up being the same cost in the scenario of gaining 1.5 more mpg. cus for the 3 bucks of cost for premium fuel, youll get an extra gallon of mileage back (23 mpg 'city'). some times i get 2 or even 3 more mpg on rare occasions. so you might as well go premium, itll cost the same plus youll get the benefits of all the other stuff i mentioned earlier. go math, lol!

I paid $1.07 per litre last time I filled up with 91 octane, and I had to drive a half-hour out of town for that (in town, we're being ripped off at $1.24/litre for 91 octane!).

1 litre = 0.2642 US gallons, so I paid $4.05/US gallon in Canadian dollars

$4.05 / current exchange rate (1.1189) = $3.62 US per US gallon.

Had I filled up in town where it's $1.24/litre, it would have cost me $4.20 US per US gallon!

....

So quitcher whinin'!

I got a locally owned 76 station that sells 100 octane for $5.00 a gallon right out of the pump over here in Stockton.
