what are the Possibilities for an '89

I bought an 89 240 for 150 bucks. the engine is shot, but i was wondering what were the possibilities for this car. How easy is the SR20DET swap?

Noodles 09-27-2003 09:23 PM

Yeah, I'll try to help. So, '89 has an SOHC engine and the sr20 swap would be a little more difficult in it. I don't know the science behind this, but from what I learned it would make the swap only a little more harder.

all you will have to do extra is get a new power steering resivoir but if you want a clean swap you gotta go source some P/S lines from a 91-94 or buy them from here

Pretty much anything is possible with the right amount of money. You could swap in a sr20, but it's a bit harder. MY advice would be to buy a low milage ka24de off someone that just did the sr20 swap, cheaper and easier.

definitely a good idea here. also, if ur not too familiar with [insert japanese turbo motor here], that will at least give u some driveability(sp?) while u research motor options, install info, and other variables (and even give u an introductory crash course in motor swapping if u haven't done one before:D ).:thumb:

this is mainly my project car. I drive a 2k2 maxima with a few modifications. I have done two engine swaps before but they were both on Hondas, and neither was a turbo motor. I was checking out Jarco in ATL(the same place we got both of our other motors from) and they will be soon having several RB20DET motors with low mileage. How easy/hard is the RB20 swap into the 89 240. And do you use the driveshaft and rear differential that comes with the front clip, everthing just magically line up? I read that you need the crossmember out of the clip and you need to extend some wires......but is that it?

The CA18DET is the japan motor that is supposed to be in that car.. so its kinda the more easy jdm swap...

some wiring , change the ecu Et voilą!

be sure to have an intact wiring harness , ignitor pack and good transmission , because i'm not sur if the transmision from the ka24E is bolting on the CA18DET... maybe after a bell housing change ... anyway

I thought I saw in the german TV commercials for the 1989 240SX back then.... where they had the red top.....I might be wrong , but then you are referring to the Japan model....so might it been different to the european models........

if'n i'm not mistaken, the ca18 has a red valve cover too... :dunno:

EDIT: did it look like this?:

It had to be a CA18DET because all European S13 200sx's were CA only.

If you go with the SR motor, then you'll need a new tach because the SR motor is not compatible with the SOHC tach. You can either get a gauge cluster from a 91 or newer 240 or get a monster tach or something along those lines.
