I need help installing knock sensor

I have been trying for hours to replace the knock sensor on my KA24DE. Getting the old one off was easy, but putting the new one on is a real pain in the butt!

The tools I'm using are a ratchet with a long extension and wobble adapter (I've also tried it with a , long needle-nose pliers, a long extended "grabber" tool, and an unfolded clothes hanger made into a "hook".

I've tried with the help of my dad, but we just cannot get the new one in; mostly because we can hardly see anything once the everything is actually in place (or seemingly so). There's also a small pipe that gets right in the way of where I need to hold the wobble adapter at the right angle to get the bolt in.

I have searched EVERYWHERE for instructions, and did find some, but none that offer any tips beyond what I already know.

Can anyone offer some helpful tips? I really don't know what else to do here...

I'm not sure how to install the knock sensor, but from what I do know is that it typically goes bad a LOT. So much that I don't think it throws a check engine light when the knock sensor is bad, it was a typical problem with the KA24DE...I remembered reading it a while back, I'll see if I can find where.

Sorry I'm not much help, but maybe if all else fails you can try to put the old one back in and not even worry about it. I dunno.

I used a long stick attached to the knock sensor and held in place.

Hmm...well, when my Check Engine Light went in May, I had it tested at a local garage. They told me that the code from the ECU indicated a bad knock sensor. Are you suggesting that this diagnoses might be wrong?

I'm not going to take the entire manifold and head/cover off. I don't even have the knowledge or skill to do that.

How was it attached? What did you use?

LOL what manifold cover? just take off the spark plug wires and unbolt the 10mm bolts holding the cover its not rocket science there should be 2 hoses just pull them off. took me a good 3min to take off my SR valve cover and it has way more bolts then the KA. just fyi if u valve cover gasket is old it will prolly break so might as well replace it, KA one cost me $16 at the nissan dealer

Well, wouldn't you believe it...my mom had a go at it and she had it in after a little while. After my dad and I spent probably half-a-day trying at it.

Ugh :p

Lol, so you got it working!

So did the check engine light go off afterwards?

epp_b Jul 21, 2007 08:40 PM

^ Yes, but that would be expected as the battery was disconnected. I guess I will know in a few weeks if the check engine light stays off.

The check engine light is not supposed to go on. However, I had the same code being thrown and my light was going on every so often too.

Oh :(

So, I just spent several agonizing hours for nothing? :(

no not really a faulty knock sensor is not a good thing regardless if the light comes on or not.

ryguy Jul 22, 2007 04:43 PM

ramos is right, I wasn't saying you shouldnt have changed it, I was just saying that it's not supposed to throw the CEL, but for some reason it threw mine too. Do not be mistaken, your knock sensor did have to be replaced.

Initial Daniel Jul 22, 2007 04:52 PM

Yeah, thats what I read also...it's not supposed to throw a CEL. Definitely replace it though, if it's bad...
