Towing with a Tow Dolly

Ok so im towing my 240 from pensacola (northwest florida) to Austin Texas which is roughly 688 miles, I bought a tow dolly for $200 i got the tire straps for $50 now how do i tow it? rear wheels on the dolly? Front wheels on the dolly? Disconnect the driveshaft? If I tow it with the rear wheels on the dolly then I dont have to disconnect the driveshaft right??? Please respond with the way I should do it, and how to disconnect the driveshaft if it needs to be. Thanks

everytime i have ever towed mine i paid the extra 20 bucks and got the full dolly

ive never used a dolly..sorry

put the front wheels on the dolly and put the car in neutral should work fine

the only thing i see wrong with putting your front wheels on is that your muffler might sratch if it is big so you might want to take your exhaust off

No, tow it backwards or disconnect the driveshaft before you tow it by the front wheels. It is always better to tow with the non driven wheels on the ground. The 240 owners manual and Google may have more to say.

*EDIT*
Cmon dude, just search. It's not a hard concept.

try not to tow with the rear wheel on the ground
if you have lsd...its pretty bad for it....

i guess i was wrong.... you learn something new everyday

i'd tow with the rear wheels on the ground, and i would unbolt the axles. that way only the wheels spin and you don't touch any of the drive train. althought i'd push for a full trailer

Last time I towed with a dolly...rear wheels up, and front wheels locked in place. Definitely do not tow with the rear on the ground.

See lol...each person says the opposite.... drift how did you work with the steering ? lock the wheel straight by turning it with out the key in ? or put the key in turn it forward to keep it from locking straight? Gimme more details on your tow please (btw im going 688 miles)

nissandrift Nov 5, 2007 05:16 PM

I just had my wheels straight, pulled the key, and turned to lock it. I only towed ~25 miles, so I'd make sure the wheel locks straight as possible.

ryguy Nov 5, 2007 06:53 PM

I think the wheels lock straight anyways when the steering locks.

Well, the reason people are saying different things is because they are using different methods. Basically, you don't want to affect the drivetrain while pulling your car across the country, so if you're towing using the front wheels tied up and the rear wheels on the ground, disconnect the driveshaft.

If you're towing the opposite, lock the steering wheel (make sure yours is able to lock), and you should be good.
