DIY: Removal of upper and lower chain guide

Note you will have to mark of your current timing position so that you are not out of phase. if you mess the timing up you simply have to perform TDC which is simple to do. write ups will assist you.

got rattle?

Get rid of it by removing the upper and lower chain guide. this was a recall by nissan becuase these part become brittle over time and could possibly break off. before they break, they Rattle.

here we go

Tools and Material needed

10mm socket
12mm socket
10mm wrench
flathead screwdriver
hammer
your choice of high temp RTV

Start by removing the 10mm and 12mm bolts at these points. to get the cpver loose. once bolts are off use hammer and flathead and lightly tap to remove cover.

Excellent write-up! This is something that has been plaguing me since day one and I was always afraid to attempt to remove those guides. This is my new project next weekend! +1 for Airman Jackson!:bigok:

You need to add that before dis assembly of the valve cover, that the crank pulley should be at TDC, and the distributor should be at 0 degrees before removal...

are these on the 98 ka's also?

Either in 96 or 97 they changed it and removed the upper guide.

Crank Pulley at TDC? Dist at 0???

Seriously... my brain has been racked hard by that psycho therapist this morning... I work for Medi-Cal, and we dont enroll Marriage, Family and Children Councelors (MFCC's)... but for sure, she herself needs a therapist.

Basically crank pulley marking at 0 and distributor/CAS at 0, this also means TDC

NiSmO Knight 06-19-2007 04:03 PM

How do I determine both? Meaning, how do I set crank pulley mark to zero and dist to zero? Dont mean to sound likea nub at this point... this day just needs to be over.

First use a timing light to set distributor at zero. Then the distributor can be disconnected.
Then with the engine off put the trans out of gear and use a torque wrench, twist the crank until the arrow and 0 are lined up. Then you are at TDC..
A timing light will need to be used when the distributor/CAS go back into place.

nice writup, bottom guides are a ***** tho, lol. had a question tho, what the reason for the internals being that copper color. mine looks like that also but ive seen some ka's that are just silver on the inside.

Biggamehit 06-20-2007 05:31 AM

generally that deals with the oil that is used... from what i know.. the KA guru BIG VINNIE may know different lol.
