ka-t timing

alright i got another question, timing.........what should the timing be at if i want to run 8-10psi? should i leave it at stock or retard it and if so how much is enough? i have read on many forums that if you turbo a ka you should retard it like 20 or somthing like that but i was just wondering what i should do for my set up cause i am about to take it to the dyno and i want to work out all the kinks that i can.

for my 8 to 10psi i am running 15* you want to be very mild if you dont have timing control which is something im about to look into...

ok so if i do 15* then it will be perfectly fine on 8-10 but if i do anymore boost than that i should get some kind of timing control

so you guys just retard it by the distributor ? I want to get bikirom soon so I can just do it via laptop

Biggamehit 06-05-2007 08:46 PM

yea bikirom is cool man more like it out there. the tuning market is semi flooded. its all about what affordable/usable to you the end user

yes sir, if you seek modest fun power you can build a pretty sound setup for cheap and have a reliable KA-t if you keep up with things... in my year of boosting, i have only had a few issues that were brought on by simply racing the car.

so it just changes that timing through a laptop. damn thats pretty cool, how do you know what exactly you want your timing to be at? is that somthing someone can do on a dyno?

Biggamehit 06-06-2007 06:07 AM

bro you can manualy adjust your timing ... and its more complicated than just chaning the timing for a desired level of boost... what any timing management does is change the ignition timing accordingly to the amount of air and fuel being injected... if one factor is off your engine goes kaaaaa blammm mo.........

so pretty much look at any timing system like a variable system that changes to keep you from detonating and blowing up.... now if you dont have timing management and are running a very very low boost setup, just retard the timing manualy using a TIMING LIGHT!!!!!! no guessing lol a light only cost about 30 bucks.

yeah IMO tuning the timing is the toughest part of ecu tuning, you have to start real conservative and start advancing the timing until theres knock then retard a couple degrees and your set, it really depends on the load and at what rpm your at. Bikirom lets you tune at a specific load and rpm and lets you tune both fuel and timing, thats what I like about it but you have to know your stuff. *a wideband afr is a must when tuning*

ok thanks that helps alot. i am just trying to learn all this **** at once, and it is alot.

rob 2fast4u 06-06-2007 07:49 AM

yeah it takes a while, you can download the software on www.bikirom.com and you can just start fooling around with it and start learning before the car is turbo'd.

Uh Im not sure if Im alowed posting the website or not ?

240baller 06-06-2007 12:39 PM

i checked out the website and it only has obd1 i have a 97 240sx. what about the msd timing controler, is that any good.

rob 2fast4u 06-06-2007 06:35 PM

yeah you would have to switch to a s13 or 95 ecu then, but if you want to can get the ecu chiped by whoever you like, then get an safc to tune it to what you want and get a msd btm to control the timing

240baller 06-07-2007 04:00 AM

i have an safc II installed already. i think i am just going to start off with 15* +/- and then get it tuned and see what happens if i need to after that then i will get that msd btm.
