Adjustable Cam Sprockets - DIY

I've been lurking here for a while and through some of you might dig this...

Jim Wolf Technologies makes Adjustable Cam Sprockets for the KA24DE...

They cost about $140... which puts too much of a dent into my beer fund...

Now if you are a frugal type of car tweaker, like myself, you get more enjoyment out of you automotive hobby by "rolling your own" performance stuff...

Why?
Because you can.

I was eyeballing the Good ol' JWT cam sprockets and the Install Instruction Sheet that goes with them...

Including the stock key-hole on the cam gear, ol' JWT adds 8 more holes to allow adjusting of the cam timing...
These holes allow advancement of the cam in 2.5 degree increments (+2.5*, +5.0*, +7.5*, +10*), or retarding the (-2.5*, -5.0*, -7.5*, -10*), all in relation to the stock setting.

Lets see... 9 holes total... 360* / 9 = 40 That is a hole every 40 degrees..

I have a spare set of Cam Sprockets, access to a vertical mill with an indexing table on it... and very few morals

So I take the spare sprocket:

and center it up on the indexing table with the stock key way set at the 0* mark on the index. I then spin the table 40* and mill a 0.25" hole through the sprocket. I keep doing this until I get all the way around the sprocket.

Bingo.. adjustable cam sprocket....:

Checked and approved by the BME Quality Assurance Department:

That should allow me to tweak my 248/248 cam setup in work at a more usable RPM range on my Project motor...

:D

hahaha thats funny as hell

yea i have been through this setup.. good one

JWT makes a kit however.. thats where the guy got most of his info..

Yeah.. I'd rather try to make a set than give JWT any money...

Which is why I bought my JWT ECU used and decoded their encrypted ECU program... which actually isn't all that...

Besides, I'd rather build stuff myself.. :)
