Anyone here have an AEM short ram intake?

Hey i was wondering if anyone here has an AEM short-ram intake... I just now bought one off of eBay for 80 bucks after shipping, and its in really good condition. Does it live up to the hype or what?

BigVinnie 04-24-2006 08:49 PM

of course it does, makes your engine sound louder too....

yup...

what color?

i have mine in polished, and my friend has his in red...

big vinnie has his in blue, if i remember right, and those are the only three colors available..

its the polished one. Sexy on a black 240 IMO.

couldnt you just get one of the cheap ones of ebay and only keep the piping then get a k&n filter and still get the same performance out of an aem one. it would be alot cheaper that way.

LA_phantom_240 05-04-2006 05:54 PM

not exactly. Ill explain why, at least what i know about it, but bigVin would have a lot more useful info on the topic.

As far as i know, the biggest difference between the AEM SRI, and the eBay versions and variations are the size of the piping. Though some have other subtle differences. Build quality is also another thing to look at. The piping in most eBay intakes use the civic/ricer theory, which is "Bigger is better. Period." and though it may be true to a certain extent, there is a point at which it does more harm than good. For instance: most eBay intakes are made of 3" piping that are made from materials that may or may not last a long time, the AEM SRI is made of high quality aluminum and if im not mistaken is 2.5, or 2.75 inch piping. Now the difference in the size of the pipe may not seem like much, but what happens when you force air through a straw as hard as you can? you get a lot of pressure but little flow right? So the velocity of the air in the straw would be pretty high. Now blow through a paper towel tube. How much pressure is at the end? Not much but the flow is a lot higher. In naturally aspirated engine, you cant just have all flow no go, and you cant have no flow all go. You have to have a balance between velocity and volume. Velocity of the air determines throttle response and to an extent it affects mileage and how efficiently the fuel burns... at least from what i understand. Volume helps horsepower more than anything else. the more air you feed the motor, the more fuel you can efficiently burn, which in turn means the more power you will make. The same theory behind forced induction.
So in short, i think the AEM intake is of superior quality because of build and because of research to find balance between velocity and volume and has dyno proven results.

sounds about right...the logic def is there

so even the intakes on ebay arent any good? i thought i would be able to make something custom with an ebay intake and put twin filters on the end. o well i ll just get an aem one or something.

Injen is also another good brand getting one for 75$ cant pass it up AEM or injen is not to much difference both well known and good quality i think.

The only thing is that engines suck. air is not being blown(i know this because my car still works with the ebrake up and the shifter in neutral) except in forced induction, whereas then, i think the whole piping explanation you gave would be exceptionally valid. Try sucking in through a straw, and then try sucking in through a paper tower tube. youll get much different results than blowing through either.

and besides, it doesnt matter how big the intake piping is when your throttle body is still a choke point unless the piping is smaller than your throttle body. much like having crushbent piping on a 2.5 in exhause thatll choke it down to 2 inches. The whole thing mightas well be 2 inches.

SOME of the eBay intakes may be jsut as good as asny made by a big company like AEM or Injen. But for the most part, they arent as good.
