hesitation in acceleration

Hey guys. I'm sure you will tell me to look a old threads but I did and can't find my exact symtoms.
I just bought a 91 240 5spd. It seems to run ok, but when it is accelerating it seems to surge. It feels like it wants to go but it keeps hesitating. It does it all the way from about 3000 RPM to 6000 RPM. It doesn't backfire or make any strange sounds. It's not really bad but it is annoying when I'm trying to kill some civics or something
I tried new plugs and a fuel filter but to no avail. The car has a bit of an exhaust leak if that helps any?

Thanks for the help. Everyone on this site is great!

also check your timing... if it is too far advanced it will have a hesitation without backfire so long as it is not too far out of time... set it back to stock and see if that helps fix your problem...

If it has an exhaust leak, that can make a big difference in acceleration, especially in that 3-6 range, make fixing the problems you know you have a priority.
