Smokin' KA

The other night, when i was coming home from dinner, my girlfriend was following me home. She was behind me and we both hit it. I let my engine rev out in second, and i looked in my mirror to see where she was. I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the back of my car. She said that once i hit it, a thick cloud of black smoke came out my exhaust. Does anyone know a solution?

i would say carbon but thats if ur running turbo..

JDMxDrift 03-18-2005 10:07 PM

could it be MAF? Something to do with fuel delivery at higher RPM's.

ProjectMy240 03-18-2005 10:24 PM

I got no clue dude.. sorry.. but the black smoke is carbon.. I just said turbo cuz my friend has a turbo and he beat the piss out of it and shoots out carbon now all the time.

JDMxDrift 03-18-2005 10:26 PM

yeah, usually turbo's do that. Its probably just cuz its an old car or something...

ProjectMy240 03-18-2005 10:28 PM

yeah.. sorry I couldn't help ya out any further then that.. but now you at least know that the black smoke is carbon.

JDMxDrift 03-18-2005 10:30 PM

yeah, could be a bad MAF, sensing wrong amount of air and delivering more fuel=running richer=more carbon??

ProjectMy240 03-18-2005 10:35 PM

mmmm... is ur stalling out when u come to a stop and how is the idle?

JDMxDrift 03-18-2005 10:36 PM

no stalling, idle's great and steady. Smoking only at high RPM's

ProjectMy240 03-18-2005 10:38 PM

ummm.....

Yeah, it sounds like a fuel system/ignition problem. From About.com
Black smoke from the exhaust:
You notice black smoke coming from the exhaust when you start your car. The smoke may or may not disappear after the car is warmed. If it is, it is less noticeable. Engine may or may not be running rough or misfiring.

Possible causes:
If you have a carburetor, the carburetor choke may be stuck closed: Repair or replace choke.

Fuel injectors may be leaking: Replace fuel injectors.

You may have a dirty air filter: Replace the air filter.

There may be some other type of ignition problem: Check distributor cap and rotor. Ignition module may be bad.
Hope that helps.

if you only run your car hard every know and then carbon just builds up and it just pushes it out. was it just a big poof and then it calmed back down? your cat could be shot too. if it idles fine and runs smooth i wouldnt think it was spark/fuel. if it was it usually run slower or rough. but if it was my guess im thinking either just build up or your cats bad?

JDMxDrift 03-19-2005 08:49 AM

Thanks, I usually don't run it hard because the engine's 15 yrs. old and it has to last me till i can get a SR. So, Build Up could be a main candidate...

Use fuel injector cleaner, after changing out the fuel filter, then give it an electricall tune up.
Also check your O2 sensor if you havent changed it it could be bad and the ecu isn't reading the delay, this will tell the ecu to dump more fuel than needed. After 9,000miles your O2 sensor only runs at half of it's effeciency.

JDMxDrift 03-24-2005 10:49 PM

sweet. This sounds like a nice little tune up. Could it possible make my car run smoother or maybe be a little more responsive??
