SOHC Lives again!

After two months of machine work, ****ty mail order on parts, and other complications I finally got my SOHC back in the car and cranked it last night. Gotta say there's nothing like an open header KA firing up and breathing fire. I just did a standard full rebuild with rebuilt head, new bearings, rings, and all new gaskets and seals since the engine had 220K on it I figured it was time. I also did a full emissions removal and timing advance to 25degrees and I gotta say I think it could hand a DOHC its ass. I will find out what she's running pretty much stock this friday when I take it to the track.

oh man sounds exciting bro. Awesome to see you representing for the single-slammers out there. Goodwork!

Biggamehit 03-29-2007 11:02 AM

congrats bro

you cant track that motor that soon.. you must drive at least 500 miles at regular rpms bro....

with your current oil do all the miles and right after 500 miles, change the oil. the reason you don't want to run synthetic ( if thats what you have now) is, it will slip past any parts that have not settled into place. thats just standard practice.

i would suggest running Full synthetic oil to preserve your rebuild after your break in period

ps
i ran 15.8 with my stock Dohc

congrats man. damn, 2 months of downtime must've seem forever

Biggamehit 03-29-2007 12:33 PM

dude i was down for about 4-5month while in school at one point after i blew my sohc, that sucked so i know it must have for him

BADA$$240 03-29-2007 01:11 PM

Thanks Biggamehit for the advice I'll do that about the break-in and nice stock time in the DOHC. Mine won't be stock for long though, about the end of next month I'm gonna get a Megasquirt II, 370cc injectors, 90mm TB, 300zx MAF, and a short ram CAI so it should scoot a little after that.

Biggamehit 03-29-2007 01:23 PM

^^
sure thing

have you done research on mega squirt?... i don't wanna scare you at all bro, but its overkill if you don't plan on using anything over 550cc injectors.

those mods you just listed will not help much on the base level NA side. you would have to go with an very aggressive internal NA build to really take advantage of it.. BigVinnie will chime in shortly lol

i was going to use mega squirt but for what i want to do, im looking at either Bikirom or power fc at the highest.

congrats on the rebuild, revival of the single slamer.

BADA$$240 03-29-2007 04:29 PM

Well with the big cam I'll eventually get and the 300zx MAF you have to tune it and eventually I'll go turbo so then again I'll need the megasquirt so it will pay for itself in the long run.

Alright guys I got a few problems with the 240. I know I got some vacuum leaks but I'm having power loss like when I get on it full throttle, is that timing or just the vacuum leaks? Also where is the temperature sensor bc my guage wasn't reading anything it was in the C but my engine and radiator were hot as ****? Also my car won't idle unless I keep on the throttle, what could that be?

Biggamehit 03-30-2007 06:27 AM

you have vac issues for sure.. you may wanna check you main idler vac hose. thats the bigger one of the two hoses that are close to your throttle body that goes into the intake piping

you temp sensor switch is located on the front of the manifold. iill place picture up from my FSM

I have not touched an SOHC in a while. i wanna say that its a Red Plug. ill make sure or someone else will verify.

Good job keeping the SOHC alive!:thumb:

zenkislider 03-30-2007 08:07 AM

sweet good luck at the track, let us know what u run.

Impact Blue 04-03-2007 03:22 PM

whoa thats awesome man, congratz ^^

BigVinnie 04-03-2007 08:42 PM

90mm is to big, the biggest you would want is 65mm and that is if the engine is beefed up on compression well. If it's stock compression I don't think you want to exceed 62mm. You don't need 370cc's unless you are turbo charging.
