Starting problems

OK guys, I've got trouble. This is all on a 90 KA24E SOHC motor.

1. It's getting spark
2. Fuel pressure is good.
3. Injectors are getting power (noid lights)
4. Battery is good.
5. Alternator is new.
6. ECU is throwing code 55, normal operation
7. Fuses are good.
8. Relays are good, I think (I don't know how to test them)

Car cranks but won't start, even with starting fluid. I'm out of ideas, and the car is at my mechanic's but he's not got a lot of time for it.

Any help GREATLY appreciated. There are a couple more things I did, but I can't remember everything right this second.

TIA

Have you checked the cam position sensor or the crank position sensor

rudeboy 08-28-2003 01:32 PM

get it started?

Rittmeister 08-28-2003 03:30 PM

Not yet.

Dammit.

It's still at the mech's. It's sort of his project right now; I don't need it to drive daily, so he's not in a huge hurry. I've been passing on everything I hear and think of; the crank sensor is something that hadn't occurred to me, and it actually sounds reasonable...

STARTER????

Dude sounds to me like your starter is bad... easy change do it urself..
Go under the car tap it 3 times with a hammer while someone cranks it the car should turn right over and fire up....
let me know..
Dont get juked by a mechanic its about 275 for a new one with installation

Rittmeister 09-04-2003 04:15 PM

Let me reiterate. THE CAR CRANKS! If it cranks I can't believe the starter is the problem. It just won't catch.

We've tried several other things, to no avail. We know it's getting spark and gas, and if it was the MAF it would run, but badly. Still thinking...

schebs240 09-04-2003 07:01 PM

ummm 1 moo time

When a starter is bad it will crank but will not have enough power to get the flywheel to start...
Just try it a few boops and something tells me you'll be going....
Remember bad starters DO CRANK

Rittmeister 09-04-2003 07:10 PM

Well, we did a compression test. All four cylinders check out OK. Could a bad starter crank the car hard enough to do this test, but not start the car?

schebs240 09-04-2003 07:15 PM

im tellin uuu

change the starter but just fuqin bang on it while u start the car and it will start a 123 simple solution and if thats it replace it 123 ur done

Rittmeister 09-04-2003 07:20 PM

I'll tell the mechanic. I'm willing to try anything at this point.

schebs240 09-04-2003 07:23 PM

duuudeeee

its under the car in the front right or left side it looks like a long gold type of color ctlinder about 8 inchs long go hit that **** right now while ur lil brother starts the car.. its next to the tranny and has about 2-3 wires coming from the end

schebs240 09-04-2003 07:28 PM

sounds to me like ur ..

sounds like ur mechanic is raping ur pockets any mechanic would of know in 5 seconds its 99% chance of it being a starter... ur gettin robbed a compression check?? and all that other **** what the fuq man ur gettin robbed blind

Rittmeister 09-04-2003 08:20 PM

I'm not getting robbed. My mechanic is an extremely trustworthy individual; he and I talk a lot. I haven't even run up $100 yet, and that's with the towing included. All that stuff in my first post up top, I did myself. I didn't bother checking compression; he might charge me $5 for that, he's just covering the bases.

And I'm sure he didn't think of the starter either, because the car cranks. I'm going to pass your advice along, but I've NEVER heard of a starter that would crank hard enough to give good compression but not start the car.

schebs240 09-05-2003 04:37 AM

starters crank

A starter will slowly crank but not sending enough of a powerfull enough spin to pull the flywheel .. I dont mean to snap at u but I don't like to see people get screwed and from what u wrote it looked like you were... Best of luck let me know what happenes.. go slap happy with that starter... and dude by a chiltons, or haynes book for your car. it helps a real lot....

Rittmeister 09-05-2003 05:00 AM

I want a manual. Haynes doesn't make one (according to PB and Autozone, it's not in their computer) and I've heard that the Chilton isn't very good. I'm looking for an FSM cheap, maybe on CD.

Believe me, I'm not a stranger to cars. My SE-R has header, exhaust, intake, FULL suspension (AGXs with Hyperco springs), all done by me. I did a cam swap on the old engine, and I did the engine swap with help from a few friends (old engine was tired). I also tracked down some gremlins in the new motor myself; it now runs like a top.

I'm just new to 240s; I don't know the KA like I know the FWD SR. I'll get there though ;)
