timing chain
 

i've searched...then i searched again...then i went and searched a little bit more just to make sure i didn't miss anything. well i was just wondering if anyone had replaced their timing chain on a ka24e? i really don't feel like paying a mechanic a grand to do it when i know i could probably do it myself. i know the book calls for 10+ hours but does it really take that long? also what are some things i need to look out for? any help would be greatly appreciated.:spin:

can someone help i just need to know how much time to take off work to do this basically

I too am getting ready to do this, but on a KA24DE. I too would love to have some help and guidance.

download the fsm from here...http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/24/47/ this will have all of the info you need on the car... and timing chain replacement is c overed as well...

i have the fsm and the chiltons i just wanted to know if it really took 10 hours or if any part of it was hard to do. when reading the fsm or the chiltons they make everything sound so easy when in reality it usually isn't.

has anybody done this?

I just tried but gave up when I could not get the lower part of the timing cover off, without taking off the head. BTW i did not need a pully popper to get the pully off, I just used WD-40 and my fingers. HaHa

Me and a buddy are tearing apart an engine right now, never actually changed the chain, but from taking it all apart looks like it will be somewhat a little pain in the ass. Lotta little bolts, gotta drop the oil pan for the bottom part of the front cover. We have the engine out of the car so it makes it a hell of a lot easier to access it all...

alright spent 7 hours today taking apart everything in front of the engine. finally got to where i can take off the timing cover and now it won't come off. does anybody have any suggestions?

I had to use a pair of... grip/puller things when I did mine. Can't remember what they are called, sort of a two pronged claw with a bolt in the back for tightning/pulling.

are you talking about a puller? i was thinkin of just taking a piece of wood putting it behind where the distributor goes and having fun with a hammer.

be careful there are 2 alignment pins on the lower half of the cover, that is why it is on so hard.... if you **** it too far one way by thittign it, thenyou could crack the opposite side.... just be sure to try and get it off evenly.... good luck

i got it off and put everything back together. i was unable to try and start it because the thermostat was leaking and the battery died from sitting around.
