what does a dead cylinder/low compression feel like?

I never really drove my car hard until yesterday. I noticed that my car was fairly slow at WOT and i was wondering what a 240 with a dead cylinder or low compression would feel like. It runs fine and i get around 27 miles to the gallon if that helps. No leaking oil and no weird sounds. I just wanted to know if you could feel the dead cylinder or low compression at idle because at WOT it feels slooowwwwww. I would compression test it but i have no money to take it somewhere.

I'm going to check my spark plugs tomorrow.

low compression would give the feling of low power at all times... the car would run fine but be down on power through all rpm ranges... a dead cylinder would give you the same feeling but the motor would shake a little,,, you would not get the fuel milage you are getting with a dead hole... it would also sound like it is missing... you could actually hear the miss with a dead cylinder...

That's what it feels like although i'm not sure if your definition of low power is the same as what my car feels like. The acceleration is comparable to my gf's 04 civic ex auto if that helps.

Well, if a cyclinder was dead, the engine would shake a lot. You'd know if there was a dead cyclinder. Especially taking off 1st gear.

yeah and you would have black soot comin out of the tailpipe from all the unburnt fuel, if the injectors are still firing that is.

does it feel like the motor is falling low on power when it gets up in the revs like 5 grand and above?

The KA motor starts to fall off on power at about 5500 RPMs this is bc the KA is a truck motor with lots of low end power but statrts to get starved for air in the high RPMs
aigen bc it is a truck motor it is a little slow to rev up not like a honda or other cars with fast/ high reving motors

It's not because it's a truck motor. It's because it has trouble breathing in the upper rpms due to the cams, the long runners on the intake manifold, etc.

O.o 27mpg?? i wish i got that.
do you have a manual or auto 240? the car only has about 135-140 hp, and the auto tranny absolutely kills the acceleration. It sounds like yours is running fine.
ngk's, magnacores, intake/exhaust will all help a little, but in brutal honesty we got robbed of the power plant that shoulda been in the car, and completely stock the KA is sluggish.

LA_phantom_240 06-09-2005 09:26 AM

its kinda sluggish till you know when to shift... but its still no beast.

I'm pretty sure the acceleration on my car isn't normal. Maybe i have a vacuum leak or oxygensensor problem or something. Something small that'll affect acceleration a little. who knows. All i know is that it feels a little slow.

LA_phantom_240 06-09-2005 08:44 PM

maybe a cat thats getting plugged?

Texas240 06-10-2005 10:53 AM

if geo metros are passing you, you've got problems.if a honda v-6 passes you, it's sad, but it's about right.

LA_phantom_240 06-10-2005 07:38 PM

yeah v-6 accords arent exactly slow.
