Engin swaps for 240 VS 300 2+2

I'm starting this thread to see what is going to be better, to do work to a 240 or a 300z 2+2. The reason I'm asking is because I'd like to have the 300 because of insurance costs (Seeing how the 2+2 has a "back seat") any suggestions would be helpful

Last time I looked 240's had a backseat...

LOL

The 240sx is definitely better on insurance than the 300zx. They both have back seats, but the seats really aren't that usable because of how little leg room there is. The 300zx is bigger and has more power, so it is going to have a higher insurance rate than the 240.

300 engine bays suck...too damn cramped

+1

dual head = dual worries

thanks for the replies all, I never looked, I was told that the 240 was a 2 seater (guess I should check for myself next time!!!)

Ok, so the second part of my dumb question LOL

What is the the best overall swap, the sr20 or the R34TT swap????

re037 04-16-2006 10:28 PM

depends on your goals. its all mostly opinion anyways.

240's all definitely have rear seats, some 300zx's are only two seaters though. If you have a big enough bank account to handle the RB26DETT swap and know what will all be involved go for it, otherwise stop thinking about it. Why even swap?

Yeah, most of the swaps are exspensive nowadays. The SR20DET is one of the cheaper ones, the cheapest probably being a CA18DET. An engine from a Skyline however, is going to cost a whole lot more. The 240sx comes stock with a N/A KA24DE engine. There are increasingly more aftermarket parts for the KA since everyone can't afford to swap, so even the KA is now a worthy engine to have.

Why swap? Good question, her is a complicated answer. My brother has a Civic DX with a b-18 swap done to it and he likes to goto the drags down in MD. well, I've kind of been bitten with the racing bug (so to speak) and I'd like to go down with them in my own car. Watching someone else race sux.... anyway I've been talking to my bro and he has me talked into one of 2 things

1: Doing a buildup on an Integra K20 and making it a turbo OR
2: Building up a 240sx and doing a SR20det or the Skyline swap to get the Twin turbo.

The probelm I have with the Integra build up is being a rear wheel drive dind of guy I dislike FF cars and I'd like to learn to drift, so that kind of leaves out the Integra I would really like to build the TT so, that is what I've been checking into. as for cost? I have a quote for the entire front clip of the R34 to be shipped (they stand behind it if a garage installs it) $4500+$700 or $800 shipping

good luck with the R34 swap, I was going to do that, until I got a price list. I was looking at $18,000. you have to get custom crossmemebers, brackets, etc. built or find them already built, after a month of looking for prices, I gave up! Its not easy or cheap! like I said before, atleast $18,000 with front clip!

So that will end up being about $5300 just for the clip shipped to you. You're also going to need custom mounts and driveshaft (McKinney cost around $1100 before shipping). You're also going to need custom downpipe seeing as you want to keep the twin turbo, thats gonna cost around $500. You're going to need an RB25DET transmission because the RB26 transmission won't work, thats roughly $1300. You're going to have to get the wiring done, which is about $400. How are you going to cool all of this, new radiator and electric fans, roughly $600 for the combo. Intercooler, I'll say around $1000. Probably gonna wanna do routine maintenance on it before you throw it in there, an N1 waterpump about $250, about $370 for a full gasket set, some decent belts $125, new clutch about $900 or higher for an Exedy, new fuel pump which is about $100 and then various other things I know I forgot and things that may go wrong during the swap. Then, unless your doing the swap yourself, theres the labor for the install. I don't wanna know how much that is. Also lets not forget the donor chasis, roughly about another $700 on the total.

Thats all just a rough estimate pretty much off the top of my head. It is an expensive swap and if you can afford to spend over $12,000 on swapping a stock engine into your car more power to you. If you wanna upgrade anything its gonna cost, and if anything would ever go wrong how many advanced auto parts stores carry RB26 parts? None that I know of. If your looking to have something because you want twin turbo, go Z32. It'll save you money and parts are more readily available in the US.

My $0.02

Thanks for the imput guys I don't want you to think that your words are in vain, I am taking all of this into consideration!!! I'm just trying to get a baseplan set up so I know what I need to do and how much I need when I start this buildup. Hopefuly I wont fall on my face too much while doing this
