non-running 77 ford GT-40 (kit car) Chevy 350(?) engine.
Reason it's not running - can't find a starter for it because we're not sure which engine it is tried the starter off a 305: didn't fit, tried a starter off a 350: fit, but not all the way. The engine has 16 miles on it, and then the starter went out and autozone gave us the wrong one and lost the original. The guy that installed the engine doesn't know which engine it is...

I believe NAPA can get you setup if you give them the engine code on the block. I believe! Don't quote me on that, I remember my kit-car buddies (Locosts and such) getting starters not based on the make/model but on the engine code. Some even had them ordered by specifying the bolt pattern/layout and number of teeth on the flywheel.
I'm just throwing that out there, I'm almost positive that you've thought of all that already, just saying. I dunno, maybe it's worth a whirl.
