Project KA24DE **newbie**

hey all, just want to get a presence on the forum. So here's a little of what i'm working on.

i bought a 1991 240sx LE last fall and have already started to modify it. i'm planning on keeping this car on a small budget, and utilizing the KA24DE motor.

Thus far, i have done the typical mods: Generic cold air intake I picked up for $30 tipped with K&N filter. PaceSetter header, and catback duel tip exhaust $310, XTD stage I racing clutch kit $132.

My summer plans include, underdrive pulley set, short throw shifter, hotter ignition, maybe lighter flywheel, but i haven't seen any KA24DE's moded with one so it may not be needed. plus, i want to upgrade to an electric fan.

I believe that I need to start becoming concerned about my seals and valves. burning about a quart of oil between oil changes, and i'm puffing white smoke during stop and go driving. any ideas on this?

alrighty, I'll post pictures and more info once i get my feet wet on here. Thanks for reading...

Trevor

If you have white smoke coming out of your exhaust I believe that means that some oil is getting in the combustion chamber. I'd watch your head gasket. It's either coolent or oil that is causing that problem; both coolent and oil make smoke come out of the exhaust, I'm 40% sure that white smoke=oil, coolent=black smoke.

Oh and Good luck on the build and Welcome to the Forums!!

I can see around the head gasket, that the previous owner used some kind of liquid gasket to make the seal. A friend is suggusted that I shave, port, and polish the head to gain compression. With 9.5:1 compression, does anyone think it's worth it???

the white smoke could definitely be a sign of a weak head gasket, especially if the smoke increases significantly at wide open throttle.

port and polish is always a good idea so you should definitely go for that if you have the funds, but be careful on shaving the head. shaving off too much could have negative results.

finally, id suggest checking out NST, www.NonStopTuning.com in your hunt for an underdrive crank pulley for your project. i like mine :)

Thanks for all the welcome notes!

Alrighty, we here in the northeast had some dry weather, I couldn't resist, so I took the nissan out for a drive...

While the car was resting in the garage, we had installed PaceSetter header, and catback exhaust. After my drive, I popped the hood to check the bolts and for leaks. Both of which were good. But, I noticed that the heat paint had completely burned off the header. How important is it to either wrap the head in heat tape, or repaint with better material??

Also, does anyone have a good idea with the amount of horse power a KA24DE motor puts out with a cold air intake, header, and catback system (cat aslo hallowed out)?

Welcome bro, and just in case the other owner didnt know what they were doing when they put the gasket on you might want to check it out.

Just happened to notice that my clutch is slipping in 4th and 5th gear. The clutch has only 320 miles on it since the install. Does anyone know if during the break in time (manfucture recommends 500 miles) whether or not it needs to be adjusted, and how?

This is VERY BAD  for your clutch. If it only has 320 miles, and is slipping, it is very possible that your clutch is f*cked. The usual break in time for a clutch is around 500 miles. During that time, you are supposed to drive lightly, until the clutch/flywheel/transmission are all comfortable with each other.

You may have buggered your clutch my friend...

Have a pro check it out though, I may be incorrect.
