short shifters

just wondering what brands of short shifters you guys/gals have good experience with. browsing ebay and came across a couple of inticing ones.

just wondering, but for mr2s, people discovered that there was an ebay b & m replica that was exactly the same with very good fit and finish at just a fraction of the price; twenty bux or something. wondering if anybody had any experience with these replicas.

nevermind; my lazy ass finally searched

Chiefgmsr 01-07-2005 02:46 PM

I've been hearing that B&M makes the best for the 240. But my cousin Had a generic in his CeRX R.I.P and its worked fine, never grinded or missed a gear.

S14Dude 01-07-2005 03:23 PM

DONT BUY THE EBAY SHIFTER. it sucks ass. the throw is nice and short and solid. But the plastic piece on the pivot ball breaks really easilly. Thats what happened to me so i just switched back to the stock shifter. I want to try the nismo shifter, its called a "solid shifter" so im assuming the throw is the same, but feels nice and solid. Otherwise C's and B&M make the best one. If you get B&M, make sure you get the "version 2" because this ones come with NO knob on it.

Chiefgmsr 01-07-2005 03:46 PM

yea I heard the Ver2(1 w/no knob) is better. Less noize. Thats what i would get. but goodluck

sw20>>s14 01-07-2005 06:22 PM

yeah so i've heard. i have another question though, for the C's, does the model count? i saw a C's on ebay for pretty cheap. it's used and the seller says that it's an older model. he said you could tell by the mounting bolts or something. claims that there is no difference in performance or durability in older or newer models. is this true?

damn, thought 240s could luck out like mr2s and get cheapo shifters that work just as well as b & ms...

RealDS13 01-11-2005 12:46 AM

yea i saw the nismo one too..is it a short shifter?

Nismo "solid" shifter is nothing special - basically like the stock one but without the dampening isolator. You get a better feel when shifting, but it's not even worth the price. Also, it's not short throw either - whoever says it is is imagining things

BTW - B&M version 2 isn't better because of no knob - it's claimed to be better because of "no buzz" at 4000rpm+... although some people still say it does. I wonder if those people are using universal "screw-on" shift knobs instead of threaded ones.

I got a 'megan racing' short shifter thru a group buy but I think what I got was the crappy ebay one. it felt solid for a while, but as it broke in it got very sloppy and it made A LOT of noise.

That's because basically, it is an Ebay shifter. Same design, I wouldn't be surprised if it was sourced from the same manufacturer too.

for those of you guys who have short shifters, do you guys experience grinding or rough shifts often? i was told that short shifters are bad for you syncros, yet everybody still has them and there seems to be no cases where people mess their syncros up. anybody with personal experiences or tips?

RealDS13 01-19-2005 12:54 AM

Hmm i was thinking of the nismo "solid" shifter but im just a avid nismo collector. Hmmm i have no clue:) Is the nismo shifter worth the money?

for starters, check the transmission oil level

Levi SPL S14 01-19-2005 01:33 PM

I have a pilot shifter its good.

twofotisx 01-19-2005 02:03 PM

I have a OBX shifter. It works nicely. Never had a problem with it. Actually I just test drove another 240sx with an OBX shifter in it too. It felt just as smooth as mine and it's most definetly a shorter throw.

DriftOrDieTryin 01-20-2005 10:19 PM

i got f***** on my obx sort shifter it didnt come with the nylon pivit thingy and another retainer im so pissed off GGRRRRR.......

anyone know where i can find the little nylon peice

REDS240 01-22-2005 12:45 PM

I BOUGHT THE CHEAP E-BAY SHIFTER AND IT WORKED LIKE ****. I HAD A HARD TIME FINDING THE HAPPY MEDIUM TO TIGHTEN IT IN. IF YOU MADE IT TO TIGHT, IT WOULD NOT SHIFT, BUT IF IT WAS TOO LOOSE, THE SHIFTER WOULD JUST SHAKE ALL AROUND AND DO WHATEVER IT WANTED TO. IT NOW SITS IN MY SHED, PART OF IT, THE OTHER I THROUGH SOMEWHERE IN THE WOODS BEHIND MY HOUSE WHEN I PUT THE STOCK ONE BACK IN. I THINK I AM GOING TO WAIT TILL MY TRANNY GOES, WHICH WILL BE SOON, AND SEE ABOUT WHAT A TRANSMISSION GUY SUGGESTS.
GOOD LUCK

l2aine 01-22-2005 01:20 PM

relax with the CAPSLOCK dude.

james_s14 01-29-2005 05:25 PM

ok guys. ive had the b&m shifter for about 4 months now (ver2). the shifts are nice but its rough going into gears, it rattles like crazy. personally i think they suck ass. the vibrating will get louder and louder...and its not only at 4000+ rpm. its whenever you are not on the gas and your car is moving in gear. also, i just bought the nismo shifter but i havent installed it yet. i will keep you guys posted..but in my opinion, stay with the stock shifter or any other shifter thats not a piece of crap (c's or nismo). dont get the b&m shifter...ive had synchro problems as well...

l2aine 01-29-2005 10:27 PM

ok, that's the first complaint about the B&M shifter that I've read since I've been here... hmm....

ArticDragon 01-30-2005 01:15 AM

Syncro problems are normal in our cars.
