Paint It Black?

I was just cleaning up my engine bay on my pearl white fast back because i pulled my sr to do some maintaince to it. After scrubbing the crap out of it with purple power and various other cleaning products i cannot get the engine bay completely clean. It still looks oily and grimy. And i just dont like the way it looks. I have a buddy that thinks i should just paint my engine bay black. I dont know how i feel about it. I guess i could just repaint it white, but i think it will just get dirty and nasty later. This isnt a show car, id just like the engine bay to look nice.

so what do you guys think? paint it black or white? do you think the black engine bay on the white car would look strange?

+black

well if it's still oily and grimy you're going to need to prep it pretty well if you paint it. i would just get it as clean as you can and maybe paint the body of the car instead.

clean it with everything you can and get the stuff off...use acid and other products plus sand it, grinder maybe and primer on parts that aren't coming but be careful with handling it. then go black because you won't notice as much as white and I prefer it.

It just looks oily and grimmy. but in fact its just stained that way. The car had a ka that leaked every kind of fluid everywhere. And now the old white paint is just stained and nasty looking. Its very clean now as in no residue or anything like that. I actually used brake parts cleaner(i know not the best stuff on paint) to get the most nasty stuff off. But yeah i plan on fully prepping before paint. Next question, gloss black or flat? the paint on the outside of the car is in really really good shape. So im going to worry about the outside later.

thats 2 for black.

I say a medium flat black, then its easier to patch up and you cant really tell too much where you had over spray or w/e. Heres a picture of my old 240 with the med. flat black engine bay:

^^ i like your gatorade bottle....i did something similar to that except i had a powerade bottle collecting p/s fluid V-_-V

S13NismoStyle 02-16-2008 04:46 AM

yeah the gatorade bottle is a nice touch. But im going to start tearing stuff out of the engine bay today. i might document the whole process.

any particular brand/type of paint to use? Rattle can or buy something for my spray gun? Ive read about people using rustoluem paint with a gun. I might run that route.

MS!3 02-16-2008 10:16 AM

hell, if you've got a gun don't even think about spray paint.

S13NismoStyle 02-16-2008 03:14 PM

yeah ill use my spray gun. Im not gonna clear it though. Im just going to use some high gloss rustoleum that comes in a can. bleh, i was taking out my battery trey and the damn thing was so rusted when i was banging out the pinch welds it ended up tearing a hole in my bay. So i had to cut the hole for my intercooler piping a bit larger. :smilie_thumbsdown:
