ABS, how to find out?

what can I do to find out if a certain 240sx has ABS or not? i'm thinking about purchasing my friends..but he doesn't know if his has ABS either, and we both don't know how to find out.
it's a 1989 automatic...

also before anyone says anything about searching =P i did do the search, and tried different key terms to search hehe

also i was wondering how much do you think it'll cost to get the check engine light fixed at a dealership? that's the only problem with the car, the check engine light wont turn on.

yea u could just stomp on the brakes like Catharsis said, if it has abs there should be some sort of abs light on the dash, or it would really help if he had an owners manual. that would def. say if it has abs.

Why not keep it simple and just check under the hood for the ABS actator? Large, metal thing with brake lines coming out of it, on the right side of the engine bay near the wiper motor.

As for the engine check light, change the bulb in the cluster. (assuming the cluster is still working fine). That might be a good start.

Why do you need to have ABS? Your in CA. I can't imagine that it snows that much where you live.

But follow l2anies post and you should be fine. But I'm sure the dash should be enough of an indicator.

i don't need ABS at all, it's just that besides the Check Engine Light, he told me yesterday that his car is in need of new rotors and pads, which isn't all that expensive to buy, he told me he can change that before he sells it to me but he said kragen asked him if he has ABS or Not...

oh and as for the check engine light, he said that he did change the bulb, still didn't work, so he took it to a shop and they said that did a diagnostic test? and it still didn't work. and the guy at the shop said to just bring it to a dealership. That's why i was asking how much it'll cost to get it done at a dealership, cause i assume they'll know for sure how to fix it.

Look at the master cylinder coming off of the brakebooster on the firewall. If it has only 2 lines coming out of the passenger side (leading to the ABS actuator), it has ABS. If it has 3, you should be able to trace all of them and not find an actuator. Master cylinder's with 3 lines coming out of the passenger side do not have ABS.

ABS isn't that cool anyway. I like to feel my car get my DRIFT......HAHAHA...... If you have a light weight car and an expesive suspension ABS isn't really neccessary.......

check for an "R" in the 10th digit of the Model ID number, located on the VIN plate on the firewall.
