leaky steering rack

I'm pretty sure its the steering rack. some fluid is leaking from just above the left rack mount. its really wet around the mount. it smells the same as the fluid in the powersteering resevoir. as anyone had this problem before and is it an easy fix or will i spend a fortune at a repair shop?

first find the "real" souce. it may be just a bad hose and not the rack.

Spray the whole thing (Whole thing = steering rack, rack mount bushings, p/s resevoir, all p/s lines, steering column shaft input, tie rod boots) with degreaser, rinse, dry with a towel so it's nice and clean.

Drive around for a bit, then you should be able to pinpoint the source of the leak, although I think Levi's right about the p/s hose. If it's a rack, expect to pay about $100ish for a remanu. unit, not including labor and alignment.

My dad made me take it to shop this morning, i really hope its a hose.

Shop couldn't find anything.

i have the same problem with my s13 i took it into a shop to check it out and they said its the rack and to replace it it would be around $600 including labor and everything!! haha good luck

now i'm really mad. the leak came back its a clear sticky liquid leaking down off of the left side of the driver side rack mount. what other fluids run near there? all i see p/s and oil pan. my dad thinks its brake fluid. even though no lines run near there. he thinks its the brake fluid from the clutch master cylinder (its draining somewhere, even after we just refilled and bled the lines, air is getting into the system).

did you do the thing where you clean everything (I meant everything) then recheck in a day or two?

acfalconhawk 01-10-2006 06:59 PM

yeah, the leak is sporadic. waiting for it to drip again.
